This is about a week after raking (not really scarifying, the Flymo isn't heavy duty enough) and fertilising/seeding with Aftercut - lots of brown/yellow grass, maybe because it has grown too long before cutting it previously? Anything else I should do to it before winter?

It actually looks pretty good when growing and cut regularly, just mossy and a spongy layer of thatch.

14 days from sowing it...

I don't think I can wait more than another 2 weeks before cutting it. I know you should wait until it's around 3-4 inches, but it's that length already in most places. At what point can I walk on it to remove leaves and weeds? There are also a few areas which are a little bare compared to the rest, should I put some extra seed down there now and cover with a little top dressing or should I wait until the spring and seed the whole lot?
That looks fabulous to me! Only 2 weeks! Nice!
I'd be patient with the mowing and clearing....the weather is due to pick up after next week, perhaps wait for then.
Not sure about the 'when can you walk on it' question. It looks pretty established on my screen, but again I would be patient. I can't see the bare patch, but if you want to mow, maybe seed a bit after then?

I know ow people will probably get fed up of me mentioning this but check for dry patch (Google it on rhs website if your not sure) easiest way would be to get a spade a take a square of turf up, if it's bone dry underneath then it's dry patch, if not then pop it back in and it will knit back together and carry in watering

I'm also hoping for dry weather this weekend, as planning on scarifying, overseeding and claiming back some of the borders to straightlen out the lawn.

Im after some advice, I seeded my garden 3 weeks ago after turning it all by hand a few times and from nothing it's now grown really patchy, what do you guys think I should do? I was going to leave it until next year before I cut and reseeded the garden again but I'm thinking I should chuck more seed turn?

Apologies for the bad phone picture... but you get the idea!

Looks to me like a simple case of you not spreading the seed evenly. Perhaps put some more seed on now while the ground is still warm and this time cast it evenly across the square meter boxes. One handful to a sq mtr.

How late is too late to overseed?

I put iron sulphate down 2 weeks ago and was wanting to do another application after raking the grass as well to get as much moss as possible. Going by advice from lawnsmith, it'd be raking after 3 weeks and iron sulphate down again a week later so that there was a full 4 weeks between applications.

That's then eating into October though, still worth a go or is there a better course of action for this year? Bearing in mine I'm on the east coast of Scotland and not in Cornwall.

Middle of October is about the latest you would want to consider it, but it depends on the temperature too.

Well that'd be the start of October so hopefully it's mild.

The grass in the corner of my garden (in a lot of shade) died out over last winter. Probably the shade and leaves killing it. So I put down a load of seed in spring (shade tolerant), and all looked good for a bit, but it looks like it is starting to thin out again a bit now as it gets colder.

Any tips for saving it? Overseed? (or too late in the year?). Or do I just accept that grass won't grow in that shady corner?

Quick question on scarifying, what the order to do it?

-Cut grass
-Scarify
-Rake
-Cut again

Or have I got that wrong?!

cant argue with that, the cut after is more to collect any left over rubbish after raking. dont go too mad with it and I would apply an iron based moss control after (not 4 in 1 stuff)

Moved into my house 6 months ago and I've got a reasonably large area of grass that has been neglected and more recently had building materials on it, hence it's about as bad as it can get.

It's covered in weeds like clover and moss.

To start the renovation process I am thinking:-

i) Now - kill the weeds and moss
ii) Scarify and rake
iii) Top dress and autumn feed
iv) In Spring - overseed

The other issue is that the house is set among many deciduous trees so I don't think that seeding now is a good idea as the area will get covered in leaves in the next month.

Thoughts?

I would suggest seeding now because if you clear the weeds and moss and topdress you are just providing ideal conditions for more weeds to grow through.

Right, thanks Mucher... I did think that may be the case but worried about the leaves covering it next month?

I'd just try and leave it for long enough to the grass to establish then clear it with a leaf blower if possible.

Thanks! That's my Saturday sorted barring rain.
