What extractor fan brand, and which really are 'silent'?
Discussion
Bear in mind the ducting, the air movement can cause a lot more noise than the fan itself if the flow is too turbulent.
You are aiming for as laminar flow as possible, basically avoiding anything that will impact the flow - rough surface, sharp bends or any kind of constriction... think of it like a racetrack, you want it to be as fast as possible.

Regarding the ability to clear the steam, we have a 32 l/min rainshower in an enclosure with the vent above in the en-suite, and even after a long hot shower there is no steam in the room. On a cool day you can see plumes of steam coming out the vent tile.
I'd say it works pretty well, we never need to open the window to clear steam...
Interesting you say that. We've got an S&P, directly above the shower in our en-suite (which is currently underfed by a substandard combi) and yet it won't keep the room clear of steam when in use. I'd say it works pretty well, we never need to open the window to clear steam...
Need to put the window on the latch for that. It is remarkably quiet though.
Are you sure it's working properly?
We did go for the slightly larger one, (5" maybe?) and there's not a lot of ducting, but it genuinely amazing how effective it is.
I checked the window the other morning due to this thread and there was barely any condensation at all, and the room is not steamy in the slightest...

Put the fan on the outside wall http://www.fantronix.com/acatalog/Kitchen-Cooker-H... and just have a duct.
