My boiler's started kettling again. I have British Gas coming on Friday, they've been before for the same issue. I think the thermostat's gone as well because the radiators are extremely hot regardless of boiler setting.

Question is am I doing it any damage running it until they come?

The hot radiators might be a busted 3-way valve.

I wouldn't get BG in to descale a boiler - they'll probably just condemn it and try to sell you a new one. You need a local geezer with some hooch like Fernox.

They've been in before a year ago for the same issue, I have cover. The boiler is 25 years old, they've replaced the pump, the valve off the pump, the fan, the PCB (twice). I think the case and the heat exchanger are the only old parts!

What model boiler is it?

I've just soldered a new gas valve relay on the pcb of my 20 year old Ideal Classic boiler and shes like a spring lamb now.

Old contacts were fooked and sticking together, causing the burner to stay on too long.

Relay cost £2.

That pcb is used in loads of Ideal boilers of that age and this fault is likely to be quite common.

You can buy silencing compound, but I find that a correct dosage of Fernox MB3 quietens mine usually.

Put some Fermox in the radiator last week, stayed quiet for that time. Enjoying the super hot radiators though especially as it's freezing outside.

I'm going scaled up heat exchanger, especially on a 25 yr old boiler.

British Gas have been great, like I said everything has been replaced at no call out charge, all for 12 quid a month. The Fernox I put in quitened it down but the radiators are too hot, I think rfisher is also on the money with the PCB relay.

We'll find out on Friday.

I think you might turn out to be right.

Despite BG coming out numerous times before no-one spotted a missing sealing plate so they've cut the boiler off and are trying to find a plate. It's obsolete.

Anyone in a remote chance have an Ideal Classic NF40 Sealing Plate 134048 willing to sell?

Had a look on eBay. Any recommendations for Heating Engineer forums? Seem quite a few on Google to wade through.

If not, new boiler time.

Think I'd still go for Simpo Two's suggestion unless you want a new one. BG have form on boilers spares availability.

Good luck getting one of those sealing plates only way you'll get one is off someone ripping their old boiler out

Too late, they've been and gone and cut off my boiler because of the lack of a sealing plate. Funny that, they've been out numerous times and never spotted the lack of it before.

They're right on availability though, it's an obsolete part, my only (outside) hope is for an engineer to have one unused in his van or garage. Long shot I know.

BG won't accept that they said, had to be in the manufacturer's bag.

Looks like I've more chance of finding a unicorn.

Thanks but according to BG it has to be 134048 for NF40.

What ones missing the circular plate (flue outlet) or the rectangle one?. The circle one I'd say you got no chance of getting the rectangle one you can still get (is the one listed above).

It's the circular one.

Maybe it's new boiler time but not from British Gas.
