Just noticed that the anti slip pedal bin mats are now knocked down to a fiver, less than half price for those that expressed an interest.

None of the bedrooms in my house have ceiling lights, I just have lots of lamps so have to switch them all on one by one. However the rooms all have light switches, which are connected to a bunch of old style round pin plug sockets. If I swapped all the plugs on the lamps to the round pin style I could then switch them on from the doorway in one go, without blundering around in the dark.
If only I could get off my arse and do it.
I have something similar to this in my bedrooms and living room. I seldom use the main lights. Had them about ten years now.

My toilet seat won't stay up. The toilet and cistern are designed 'as one' so that the cistern position cannot be adjusted, but that means that with the seat in the upright position, it can only open <90 degrees, meaning that it just won't stay in the upright position.

As I'm the only bloke that ever uses it, I've resorted to either having a 'posh' wee (sitting down) or I have to continually hold it with my free hand to take a whizz.

What really gets me is that it's a soft close seat, so just when you think it's going to stay in position, it mocks you and slowly closes itself.....mid flow.....

VERY annoying......five years so far.....
Same here!a toothbrush positioned against the rubber bump stops holds it open nicely. ..

Picked up on this thread very late but we have one of those pedal bins that shuffles around the floor and the lid hits the wall.
We also have a plastic swing bin but we also have a dog who is a right scrounger, caught her a few months ago walking around with the top of the swing bin around her neck having stuck her head in the bin then tried unsuccessfully to get out of it

Lights: we tend to use a standard lamp and able lamp in the living room. Both are opposite the door so when you leave you need to walk to the door, put on the main light then go back to turn them off. We too have a "round pin" lighting circuit in the living room. Will add that job to an ever growing list of jobs to do..

I think we need a photo of the aforementioned scrounger dog with the bin around its neck.

I've been rewiring some lights over here in France and you wouldn't believe the shoddy push fit wire connectors originally used, I actually had a light fitting just fall off onto my coffee table prompting the investigation and the change.

Please tell me that’s a spare toothbrush and not one someone actually uses!

These things?

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Winged-Plas...

Wire nuts aka fire nuts. I had a faulty bedside light at a hotel in Italy one year; having determined that it wasn't the bulb I unscrewed the fitting from the wall and there were a couple of wire nuts providing the connection; they looked OK to be honest but that was the end of my investigation.

Not exactly those things, but bayonet fittings with push fit wires (you just jam them in and it traps the wire between two flexible metal strips) - same dodgy principle though!

I rented a place once that had that problem. A bent metal coathanger that hooked round the seat and the flush handle did a great job for about 2 years :-D
Without the word 'rented' this could have been my Dad posting - bought the house in 1973 with this problem, solved it with a bent coat hanger about 10 years ago . . .

Bathroom door inexplicably opens outwards and blocks the landing off completely.
To give more room in the bathroom? We changed the door round in our flat to open outwards as before the sweep of the door covered most of the floorspace in the bathroom.

So did we, and I put a perco door closer on it so that it always shut and didn't block the landing, plus it stops the kids (yeah, it's the kids wink )from stinking the house out post dump.

Two ceiling lights in the upstairs hall, both of which have a different switch at the top of the stairs but only one of which is linked to the switch at the bottom of the stairs. You can see where this is going...

Gets me about 50% of the time which results in going back up the stairs to switch the other light off. curse
I got round this with smart bulbs and a motion sensor. If you walk up or down the stairs the hall and landing light go on, then turn off after a few minutes.

My buddy with the Anti slip pedal bin mat (www.goodboyinnovations.com) invented due to this thread, just dropped me a message to say a few more have been sold this week, although it might be due to him halving the price. If it's any of you - I'm passing on his thanks!

Regarding the doors opening into valuable spaces, has anyone gone to the effort of changing to slide doors? One of my friends has done this recently and it has helped him no end to gain space in his apartment, although it does make me want to make Star Trek door noises on opening/closing.

Small update on my mate's little venture with the bin mats, an invention prompted by this thread...

After listing on eBay and Amazon it continues to sell a few each month, along with the direct website purchases, trickling along and covering costs is how he described it... smile

Next step requires some shops or bin manufacturers to list it, as the problem is getting exposure to people, marketing is expensive and hasn't yet been explored. Google searches seem to turn it up when people are looking for non slip or anti slip bin mats, so the SEO's work.

The website has been improved and redsigned and it has some fancy new logos etc. Once again, any comments or feedback are appreciated from you lovely people:

Apologies if already mentioned but after page three of the thread I gave up all hope that someone would mention, in relation to people's bin issues....Brabantia.

There it is. Problem solved. Class bin. Guaranteed for 10 years. One part that might break (a small catch that keeps the lid closed). Call the help team and you'll get a replacement in a few days.....for free.

It may be an expensive purchase when first bought (currently £80 for the larger bin) but I can't remember what was paid as I bought ours over 15 years ago. One new catch received. No additional cost incurred. Apply man maths. The end.

Maybe you bought the exception, my Barbantia bins slide around all over the show, or at least they did until I used the mats... It was Brabantia bins costing so much and still sliding around that kicked my buddy and his start-up into action.

I suspect it's the flooring surface, mine were far too mobile on glazed tile flooring frown

I didnt buy the one with a foot pedal but rather the one with a touch lid. No need for any slipping around
