That was kind of the point in my original post, the digging bit alone is quick!

Last year we had about 900 cubic meters of soil stripped, sifted of debris and neatly piled up in no time at all.
Yes - took about a week and a half once he got into it. It was quite interesting to watch, as it was right under my office window. Basically dug right down then built himself a ramp to get back out again!

In defence of the original quotes I had a big hole dug in my garden about 15 years ago, It is about the size of 2 tennis courts and a maximum of 3 metres deep, used the soil to make banks and left an island in it. It's now a quite mature 'natural' pond. Cost was about £1,000 and took a skilled driver with a 10 tonne digger about a week.

Nowhere near as well designed as your big hole though!

Bit of a thread revival. I had occasion to be in that part of the world for a fork lifting job and drove past the site as a lorry-load of formwork was about to be unloaded by crane. No doubt preparation for the next concrete pour and more beefing up of the containment field.

A brilliant lunchtime read, and as always I have learnt lots about things I don't come across often. EG civil engineering and large holes,
and SF6

I am part of the way to understanding why HS2 will cost £87 trillion, but not in agreement with it's costing fully smile

change from £500 turned eventually into a massive mission creep (don't they always?) and change from £200,000.

Just passing through, OP needs to ask the President of the EC, she seems to be the go to person with such a wealth of hole digging in her CV. wink

Probably the roof formwork. 23 lorry loads of concrete in one day was nice.

Realised that I never posted any pics of the finished bunker so here's a few. If anyone's got a big building project I'd recommend GF Tomlinson. They were my main contractor and were excellent.

The accelerator arrives in the country at the end of the month so it's exciting times. We should be up and running late summer.

Well that's a bit of a giveaway as to where it is.

Interestingly the google earth/maps imagery shows your big open hole still while streetview is from before the excavation.

Thought I should update again. Lots of big bits in - it fits! Waiting on lots more parts over the next few months before we throw the big switch.

Give us a clue, what is it?

It looks like a weapon a bond Gillian would build in such a bunker… hehe

Particle accelerator. Low energy as these things go at 'only' 2.6 million volts. Very high beam current though - 30mA+.

We're going to use it to make neutrons. Basically as a substitute for a small nuclear reactor. No test reactors in the UK any more so we need something to test materials and instruments.

Thanks, very interesting. Any links to reading material on the project?

I'd pick Anderson if I had to choose but they're both pretty lively, (allegedly)
