How much does it cost to dig a really big hole?

That was kind of the point in my original post, the digging bit alone is quick!
Last year we had about 900 cubic meters of soil stripped, sifted of debris and neatly piled up in no time at all.
Yes - took about a week and a half once he got into it. It was quite interesting to watch, as it was right under my office window. Basically dug right down then built himself a ramp to get back out again!Last year we had about 900 cubic meters of soil stripped, sifted of debris and neatly piled up in no time at all.
In defence of the original quotes I had a big hole dug in my garden about 15 years ago, It is about the size of 2 tennis courts and a maximum of 3 metres deep, used the soil to make banks and left an island in it. It's now a quite mature 'natural' pond. Cost was about £1,000 and took a skilled driver with a 10 tonne digger about a week.
Nowhere near as well designed as your big hole though!

A brilliant lunchtime read, and as always I have learnt lots about things I don't come across often. EG civil engineering and large holes,
and SF6
I am part of the way to understanding why HS2 will cost £87 trillion, but not in agreement with it's costing fully
change from £500 turned eventually into a massive mission creep (don't they always?) and change from £200,000.

Probably the roof formwork. 23 lorry loads of concrete in one day was nice.

Realised that I never posted any pics of the finished bunker so here's a few. If anyone's got a big building project I'd recommend GF Tomlinson. They were my main contractor and were excellent.
The accelerator arrives in the country at the end of the month so it's exciting times. We should be up and running late summer.

Particle accelerator. Low energy as these things go at 'only' 2.6 million volts. Very high beam current though - 30mA+.
We're going to use it to make neutrons. Basically as a substitute for a small nuclear reactor. No test reactors in the UK any more so we need something to test materials and instruments.

Thanks, very interesting. Any links to reading material on the project? We're going to use it to make neutrons. Basically as a substitute for a small nuclear reactor. No test reactors in the UK any more so we need something to test materials and instruments.
