Just looking at a cost report for one of our jobs. 5m deep excavation at just £55 per cubic metre including disposal off site. But that's after the edges have been perimeter piled at a cost of £834,000....
Interesting! How big a perimeter?

What are you building, a particle accelerator?
Yes - it's an SF6 insulated accelerator surrounded by a big pressure vessel.
Blimey. I was only partly joking wink

About 110 linear metres

As in sulphur hexafluoride? That's not trivial.

We already have an accelerator in the building that's a similar design so have plenty of experience with it.

Only on PH would we have a serious "I need help building my particle accelerator" thread....

Or "buy an elephant".

OP - I think you need some professionals. smile

Plus I think this thread has surpassed "Homes, Gardens and DIY"

What is next? "I'm seeking to find some other fundamental particles and want to build a rival to CERN. How much would it cost to dig a 200km tunnel? (Basingstoke if anyone is local)"

I'm more interested in what you want to bury! A pressure vessel you say? I'm thinking dead prostitutes more like..

I was just trying to get some ideas of cost before we move to getting proper quotes- I'm not proposing to do it myself with a mini digger hehe

We're getting a survey done next and then proceeding from there. I was under the impression that this was done a little while back for something different but nobody seems to know what happened to the results.

OP, so would that mean building a similar spec basement to the existing building? ie. 5ft thick RC concrete walls and presumably the ceiling as well?

Who have you got involved so far?

Just someone to do a ground survey or structural/geotechnical engineers as well?

I thought this sounded like nasty stuff but according to Wikipedia it's completely inert & one use is to help ultrasound diagnosis by being injected into the bloodstream. You can even breathe it in as a party trick:

Oh, and I have a spare wheelbarrow you can borrow if you need it...

Make sure you oil the wheel.

Actually I've just realised I have experience of a large hole... 15m x 5m by about 2m deep, to dig out, cart and tip spoil 50m away, underpin to 2.5m depth for one 15m side and lay trench footings and a chunky 15 x 5 slab with two layers of rebar - £21k.
But they used a dump truck as the wheelbarrow has a bit of a squeak. Pussies.

Digging / ews etc @ 4m deep is a lot more than double that of 2m deep.

Your price sounds about right - did they pump the concrete?

No one has asked what he needs it for. OP - this is PH, why are you digging a big hole and filling it in again, we want to know!

Most people use the patio...

He has... "SF6 insulated accelerator surrounded by a big pressure vessel"

A particle accelerator uses sulfur hexafluoride(SF6) as an insulating gas for its high voltage terminal?

How are you going to get a hole that big to do 88mph?
