Those houses in Manchester are interesting. Half (less in the case of the "posh 2 bed" if that is genuinely the nicest area of Manchester) the price of similar properties in Zone 3 SW London.

Thing is, my salary up there would be similarly affected in my industry.

But I'd live nearer the countryside, and the driving roads of Wales, and nearer to some interesting bits of the UK! SE is crowded these days...

How do I get my wife and all my friends to move with me?
Or ditch off working for a law firm, join the likes of a virtual law firm (within a ltd company wrapper for tax) and base yourself wherever the fook you want. I spend about 8 months a year in the UK, the rest of it all over the world and don't have to pander to daft house prices for commuting purposes. Or fight rush hour traffic, or conform to law firm politics.

Photo 7/13, is there a washing machine attached to the wall!? confused

Is that a thing!?
Lol - yep

the owners are shorter people- and they said they wanted to be able to see the washing being dried

They need to stand on a stepladder to get the washing in.

All very random smile

Whitchurch, a suburb in North Cardiff. Quite desirable and pricey for Wales:

Got family in Whitchurch, some on Bishops Place just off Church Road. Church Road does have some lovely property, and some crying out for a bit of love.

I live in the SE and would happily move to Cardiff, got lots going for it IMO.

3000 square feet and 5 acres, well technically 6000 and 10 acres as I paid half that.

That's beautiful. Coincidentally, I am taking the wife to the Highlands in 2 weeks for our anniversary.

To be honest, this house has been on the market for a long time and anyone with half a mil would choose to leave elsewhere. I can see the property being torn down for development. Another house nearby has had this done, swimming pool, snooker room, the thing couldnt sell. Been razed to the floor and new houses being built.

London has always been much more expensive than Manchester (Bowdon where the 'posh 2 bed' is, along with neighbouring Hale is the most expensive suburb. Parts of Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Prestbury are similarly expensive, but are separate towns/villages) - but the great chasm in house prices which exists today is relatively new. Relative to most other areas in and around Manchester, Bowdon is very expensive. As a Cheshire resident, London house prices are so incomparably more - even if area is traded down significantly - that it is akin to viewing in a different currency.

However I can remember a time when it was physically possible to sell one of the nicer detached houses on a good road in for example Hale and buy a well located house in London, sacrificing size or area sure - but not both. Now I can't see that can be possible; the house would be both much smaller and in a significantly less sought after area. Such a house in Hale say, would be of the order of £2.5-£3 million now - and around £1 million twenty years ago. My perception is that £1m bought significantly more in London back then, than £2.5/3 million does in London now. My perception anyway - I have not even been to London for years! smile

It's a purpose built "block" of flats styled so as not to look like a block of flats. ''Tis in keeping with many of the big old houses thereabouts and is quite a common approach.

Offers over really just means the vendor knows what it is worth and what they will take, thank you very much, and won't listen to what the viewers, the agent and the previous agents might have to say on the matter. It's just marketing.
