Should I stretch myself?
Discussion
I would add some caution. Looking at the market data it last sold for £170,000 on the 19th December 2008, so while (some) houses around the country have increased in value by upwards of 100% this had hardly budged. So if it meets your needs then great, but don't expect to cash in with a lot of equity in the future!
Do you want to spend your weekends mowing the lawn, weeding the grass, cutting the hedge, or out with your mates enjoying life? Also if you settle down in the future then likely your partner will be moving into your house, rather than buying a new family home together. Don't underestimate how difficult that is both for you and them.
Your choice OP and if its what you dream about then go for it, but personally a smaller place with a smaller mortgage would be my choice during such a volatile period of time.

Indeed. This is the north - things are pretty stagnant here, and salaries are low and going nowhere. Additionally, this is pretty rural too, so not near any major areas of employment. Also I bet the house needs a fair bit of modernisation and maintenance - you could sink 50k into a place like that and still not have much to show for it.
