These are the wheels that came with the scooter - a late 70s model by the looks of it. Just ordered the lights from TL and then to finish the interior. It does have a speed limiter switch which I think I'll hide, my boy is a bit of a speed freak!

I wouldn’t like to put a percentage on how far through I am with mine. I started putting plans to wood during lockdown #1, and have got as far as having some nicely finished ply pieces that are battened and ready for assembly.

I bought an electric wheelchair recently, so now have some motors, batteries, a speed controller, front/rear lamps and indicators. The wheels are about 50mm smaller in diameter than TL’s, so some gearing will probably be necessary. Having got the thing home, my concern is that the motors are a fair bit bigger than TL’s, so fitting and alignment may be a bit of a struggle.

I don’t fancy the idea of my 4yr old doing 6mph in a heavy wooden box much, never mind 8mph!
Something that I have learned via my girls each having a Toylander is that the only damage ever done to the cars and objects on my property have been done by their friends. The girls have never so much as grazed their cars.

He's become very popular with his mates! It's the equivalent of my generation cruising around town in our Cortinas biggrin

The Daily Mail and The Sun picked up the story from some Facebook pictures on a Land Rover group so he's taken great pride in showing his other mates at school. I'm not sure how I feel about him taking copies of the Sun to school though :/

Top job. Though keep it well secure, unscrupulous folk aren’t fussy about taking toys from children.

Very pleased to have found this thread, just about to embark on my own build for our granddaughter. She's just 1 so got a bit of time.

I was wondering about drive options so plenty to go at here.

Anyone done anything and wished they'd done it different?

Which model are you going for? I have started a series 3, which is to be a copy of my full size series 3…..I really should start a build thread.

Mobility scooter axles are very popular and can be mounted in the toylander motor position with chain drive, which allows for gearing down.

If you find a scooter with big enough wheels there is no need to gear down to suit toylander wheels and you can mount under the floor, which is what I plan to do.

I used a TGA breeze, pricey donor but they are 1.3kw where most scooters are 800w and toylander use one or two 250w motors. Shoprider deluxe also very popular.

Fantastic builds here chaps. Lucky kids.

I wish I'd found out about these 10 years ago. My kids are now 13+ and I want to build one!

Just goes to show how much saving can be made over things like this;

It makes these even cooler to me.

I don't think that's bad value at all. It's a Rebel too which is a bit different to a Toylander. I spent £1000 on parts on the TL build I wrote about in this thread, plus a year of my time in the evenings etc, and there's no trailer. So I think that's a fair deal, although the feeling of pride watching my own son driving the TL I built is pretty priceless!

I might build something like this for my 7 band 3 year old, does the build manual include all dimensions etc, and list of components.
I build my 7 year old the swing car for his 4th birthday which got a fair amount of use.

Looking at getting a Toylander for my twin Grandsons. I did have a J40 and Pathfinder but have sold them.

I am probably going down the route of a Toylander kit with pre built body to save time, but with paint and extra motor etc, the cost will be around £3500. A big part of this will be the painting. Is it possible to get a decent finish on the MDF using a brushed enamel paint?

I build Christmas mechanical displays which I hand paint in a gloss wood enamel, and providing the weather is not too hot/damp/cold, and you let it harden before rubbing down for the second / third coat, it is hard to see the brush lines.

If I ‘hand paint’ I will probably save £400 over a two pack spray job, but as this is only 10% of the cost, is it worth it….as my long departed Dad used to say…..Don’t sink the ship for a hapeth of tar……

Interested in thoughts about painting…….

You need to seal mdf, use a shellac based primer like zinsser bin. Give it two coats and sand the edges after each coat, works a treat.

Enamel paint tends to flow quite well, use a foam roller and you'll get a good finish.

Mine was a rush job to get it finished for a show in blistering heat so it wasn't great. However, and this is the big thing, you'll (hopefully) have kids having a whale of a time clambering into it in muddy welllies, putting collections of rocks and sticks in the back, and essentially learning to drive with the inevitable scrapes and bangs. IMHO the last thing you want is a pro spray job that will have you and the bank manager wincing every time the child scratches it using it for what it was intended for and having fun.

That said, if I was doing it again, I'd DIY spray it using the Paintman products Toylander recommend. These are full size 110 parts after ham fisted amateur attempts by me and I am more than happy with the finish. Compressor from Aldi (dead useful for tyres and air tools anyway) and a £50 Amazon spray gun, job done.

Thanks That looks fine, and really take on board your point about usage. My neighbour has a compressor I can borrow. Do you have a link to the spray gun you got? and how much did you thin the enamel top coat by to spray….

Cheers

Reviving an old thread, finally managed to pick up a Freerider mobility scooter with a slashed front tyre and made a start

Strip down started, Test fitting new tyres went from 3.00-4 to 4.00-4

Box of wires

Chassis Painted

Side Panel

Steering is a second hand go kart steering from eBay, need to work out how to setup the steering think i may need some universal joints. Need to widen the rear axle which I've got another thread running for hoping for some help.
