Major stupid question here...
What would stop you digging a massive hole and dropping an 'above ground' pool into it and then just back filling around any pluming and gaps ?
The doughboy model we chose can be sunk into the ground I believe. You have to be careful about emptying the water as the walls could collapse from the surrounding earth. What would stop you digging a massive hole and dropping an 'above ground' pool into it and then just back filling around any pluming and gaps ?
We decided not to sink into the ground on the basis of cost and safety (we regularly have small children visiting as I didn’t want to become a nervous wreck).

The Doughboy pools look quite good. We've put down a 3m by 2m 2ft pool this year and it's getting a lot of use - like you we have to worry about the younger children - still, the temptation is to go bigger and deeper. We decided not to sink into the ground on the basis of cost and safety (we regularly have small children visiting as I didn’t want to become a nervous wreck).

Oh yes!!!
Water temperature down so it is cooling (whilst not harsh) and we are all in it several times a day!
We're running our little pool at 29/30c currently. This seems to be the sweet spot where little ones don't get out because they're cold.Water temperature down so it is cooling (whilst not harsh) and we are all in it several times a day!

Julian, do you still have the pool heating on or are you relying on the cover and sun?
Also, assuming the latter, what's the water temp in this weather?
Thanks.
Heating is still on, but using very little energy. The marker hasn't moved for three weeks! Also, assuming the latter, what's the water temp in this weather?
Thanks.

Great thread and your pool looks amazing!
We are looking at installing a pool next year. How do you heat yours and can you prevent it from freezing in the winter? I've been looking at covering our garage roof which is south facing and around 70m2 with solar panels and running a ground source heat pump.
Also do you have to drain it every year or do the chemicals do a good job of keeping the water in check for longer periods?

Thanks very much!We are looking at installing a pool next year. How do you heat yours and can you prevent it from freezing in the winter? I've been looking at covering our garage roof which is south facing and around 70m2 with solar panels and running a ground source heat pump.

Ours is heated by an oil burning boiler (we coun't get gas laid within the short build time frame) and we have it at 35 degrees throughout the winter months dropping to 30 in summer. It has cost me £60 - £65 a week for the first year to keep it heated to these levels.
30 sounds hot for this weather, but when you have been used to 35 it is actually still very refreshing without being harsh when you get in!
We obviously have never experienced any freezing problems!
I can't comment on solar panel and ground source heat pumps as I don't have them, but there will be others here who can.
There is no draining, the filtration system and chemicals do a perfect job of keeping the water in check. We test the PH level a couple of times a week and adjust if necessary.
Unless diving in is very important to you I would strongly recommend going for the same depth level throughout (ours is 1.45 metres). This greatly reduces the volume of water to be heated (thus saving money), is far safer as everyone can stand up everywhere in it and makes it all completely usable space for parties (we have had 20 people in at a time, all able to stand and hold their drinks!).
I've just seen you live in Australia, so solar and ground or air source pump could well be the way to go!
Good luck and enjoy (you will!).
