Just found this thread via your link in the Fezza thread. What a great way to pass a chunk of time today, great read and great result at the end of it. Hats off indeed to you and everyone who was involved.
Top work on the new red toy also, hopefully we'll all escape lockdown in good health and you can enjoy it accordingly
Cheers, it was great fun and I a happy eople are still enjoying reading through it!Top work on the new red toy also, hopefully we'll all escape lockdown in good health and you can enjoy it accordingly
The red toy only managed to make it to the local garage today (picking up milk for my parents) but I am enjoying just looking at it when I can't drive it!
Very nice. Looks to be a lovely example.
I'll be interested in your views relative to the Aston. I had a 360 Modena between a DB7 Vantage and one of the very first DB9s. It was a stunning car but it got far too much attention for my liking. Some was positive but a lot was negative (lot's of coffee beans). In comparison, the Astons were anonymous one positively received - I got waved out often in the Aston but never in the Ferrari.

I like them both as they are relatively analogue (compared to modern day cars), and I find the Ferrari more engaging to drive.
Basically, as I become an old git I just don't like many of the new car designs.
I think the 360 was the last classic Ferrari design and the DB9 the last classic Aston (I would include the DBS and Vantage's and your Vanquish in that era too).
Since then nothing has really struck out at me.
I do find everyone loves an Aston though and you do just get waved out all the time! In a week of ownership I am surprised that I am getting the same in the Ferrari though.
If I had to choose between the two it would be the Aston every day, as it it is just more "me", but I am loving the Ferrari every day!
The DB9 is far less "go kart" and has less "Sturm und Drang" than the 360. The 360 is definitely more impressive as a sports car.
I remember taking the DB9 down my favourite local road straight after I'd traded the 360 for it. I was shocked at how one couldn't hustle the DB9 in the way that one could the 360. I turned around and did it again but driving the car in a different way. In the 360, one could lean on the front end, aggressively turning into the corner. The DB9 needed more gentle inputs, steering in particular. But, if you set it up correctly for the corner and are smooth with the inputs, the DB9 was almost as capable. You just can't manhandle it (but you can the 360). The 360 flatters your driving. The DB9 needs great technique to get the best from it otherwise the weight at the front will push wide.
I remember doing a track day at Goodwood in the DB9 and the instructor screaming "brake, brake, brake" as we approached a corner at some speed (but perfectly acceptable, I thought). The DB9 trailed around it beautifully. The instructor said "wow, these handle better than I thought they would".
