This was such a great thread when it started, still amazed by what was achieved in the time.

Have often thought about showing it to contractors on my various similar projects who quote a 4 week period just to to dig the hole.
I would just show it to them and tell then that are are always alternatives on PH! biggrin

May well do!!

Rude question, but how much did this cost you in the end? Also, had you geared up the pool installers beforehand to attend site at quick notice? The stone layers too, you must have briefed them on your plans as any order would normally be a 2-week lead in?

Totally understand if you don't want to divulge details, in fact, I probably wouldn't either - hope you enjoy in good health.
The pool installers were a fellow PHer and his team (Nick - lrdisco) and I was very lucky in that he was able to start at very short notice. Nick and his team also did the paving stones.

I bought the pool shell from a company in Germany. It had already been made to a very high spec for another client who was 2 months (IIRC) away from wanting delivery, so I was able to secure it with them having time to build him another and have it transported over to me in 4 days. Obviously this came at a premium.

With the ground work and pool instillation happening we had enough lead time to get the paving stones delivered before work was ready to start laying these.

So the long and short of it is that it cost far more than it would have done under usual time scales, but it was important for me to do this in the 3 week time period for my daughter's Birthday, so I didn't mind this.

I won't give the total cost here, but please feel free to PM me and I will do so privately!

As they say, flat bottomed pools just make the rockin' world go round.

Agreed, brilliant comment!

Just do it with regard to your own pool!

The advantages of having a flat bottomed pool are not just the safety point, but when you have pool parties you can get loads of people in without most having to read water all the time and they require much less water than a pool with a deep ends, and are therefore significantly cheaper to heat.

Thinking of installing a pool. Figured it would be best to start with the essential items like Julian did and go from there.

I agree with Mike, you already almost there with your own Forky! biggrin

May I ask how much is costs per month to heat your pool?
Roughly, it is between £200 to £250 a month, but now my daughter is older we keep it cooler during summer and the solar cover certainly helps.

I keep my pool at 29C-30C from June-October - four to five month's use. It's probably 13m x 6m x 3m. I seem to get through about a tank of oil a year - top up is roughy £800. Most of it is used getting the water up to temp. Thereafter, it tops up as needed and a good solar cover keeps the heat in overnight. We pay someone to do the chemicals and keep it clean. I guess that is about £1200 a year (that's for opening the pool for summer, maintaining it and winterising it again) but my wife heads off that bill.
Hi mate, lovely sized pool.

We use our all year round and change the temperature accordingly to suit the ambient air temperature, so in winter is can be up to 35/36 degrees.

The solar cover is great and means we can turn the heating off in summer, which I believe was a Friday this year! biggrin

This is all quite obvious. sbk1972 has a 15 foot long pool that it 3 metres deep.

biggrin

Being serious, that is an amazing length and girth. I could not compete! smile

To the guys with pools, what sort of in pool lighting do you guys have ? At the moment I have a couple of Certikin 300w 12v lamps located at either ends. Im thinking of `jazzing` it up a little and installing some LEDs. Just wonder what you guys use.

SBK
Hello

I have LED lighting, so we can change the colour as we we fit.

The reality is that we never do and keep it on the traditional aquamarine setting.

Dr Interceptor is your man here. He has forgotten more than I will ever remember!

I have an 23,000 gallon in-ground marcite lined backyard pool at my home in Central Florida. The lighting is a single, bright white LED, mounted in the deep-end wall. I recently had the pool re-surfaced and tiled and did consider adding more submerged lighting, but decided against it, because 1) adding wiring and light fittings to an existing pool shell is expensive and 2) it gives a somewhat 'scattered' lighting effect and I wanted something more uniform and tranquil. It is relatively easy to swap the bulb for a different color or even a multi-colored one, but I quite like it how it is.

Lovely lighting Matt.

I have disconnected one of mine (the one at the steps end) as the pool company (not lrdisco - Nick) provided a transformer that couldn't handle the number of lights fitted and they kept on blowing.

Its loss makes absolutely no different whatsoever! smile

Is it worth the extra for colours? We've got colour changing LED strips in the kitchen at home. How often do we put them on? How often do we change the colour? Exactly!
We had an LED white pool light fitted.. in Portugal... if my precovid memory serves me correctly irked In place of existing halogen - uses same cabling, same transformer etc but it's only 15 or 30 watts or something tiny - man maths - cheaper! Looked easy to do - just pushes into existing backbox with three adjustable rubber 'feet' to wedge it in. Hardest bit was making water resistant connnections into the existing cabling - heat shrink, soldering etc. Ours is Hayward - Certikin should do similar easy-swap kits.
Whatcha really need is a colour changing palm tree. Yes, I know... the council thread is that way ->
Not really.

It was fun at the beginning (particularly for my daughter) but now we just keep in natural.

Love your pool and the palm tree (with its lights)!

Where in Portugal are you? I used to have a villa in the Algarve.

That is looking stunning! Our pool build has been postponed until next year as all of our local installers are booked up until October.

What are those potted plants around your pool? They are beautiful and my wife asked me to ask smile
Thank you Chris! smile

They are Portuguese Laurel. I got them from formplants.com - ask for Danny.

The pots were bespoke made and are finished in bronze which start to oxidise over the years giving little green flecks.

The were from torcpots.com - ask for Nicole.

Cheers!

This thread has made me want a pool at my house on London.

Insanity, but Lady F said yes, yesterday...

I would like something indoor/outdoor to add to the complexity (but would like winter use). I suspect that this would be financially ruinous.
Just do it Lord Flashman! biggrin

You have a stunning house and it would add another dimension to it.
