Final phase interview for an internal transfer to our facility in Portsmouth, just starting looking at buying a house.

I have been looking at Fareham, Waterlooville and along the Motorway towards Southampton.

Budget of about £400k as I don't want to sell up at home, must have a garage, quiet and a garden, don't mind a renovation project.

I've never been to Portsmouth so any local knowledge of traffic / areas would be great.

ETA; Hayling island, any info?

Was there a question?

If you're working in Portsmouth then I wouldn't look further to the West than Whiteley. The other direction isn't quite so bad traffic wise.

Portsmouth is the only place I've lived in that makes Luton look sophisticated.

I've never lived in Portsmouth but my sister lives in Southsea which is very nice.

Not sure if that was any help.

Thats not true.... I spent 6 months in west africa. I'd prefer to spend a year back there instead of a month in luton.

Born and Bred in waterlooville (just down the road) and lived in portsmouth for a fair while. I would advise not to live into town, really not fun.

However, lots of places have quick access. Fareham is 10-15 mins, however don't go far into gosport etc, as you'll add serious morning issues with traffic.

Waterlooville, Farlington, Whitely, Portchester, will all be close, and youll get a lot for your budget.

Just checking you're not me - nope too far north. I've got one of those who lives there too.
Southsea seems ok, close to the sea and the estuary. Plenty of garages in the area I visit.

Clanfied, Denmead, edge of Horndean, Rowlands Castle, Petersfield and Liss all very nice if you don't mind going up the A3 a couple of junctions. Further south, Farlington offers fantastic views of The Solent if you find something on the hill. Port Solent is a well established marina but properties aren't massive and service charges can be pricey.

In Portsmouth itself, your options are limited as it's such a compact city. Old Portsmouth is a lovely few square meters, the residential area of Gunwharf offers good links into London, just choose a place with a view of the harbour. Southsea can have some great sea views but your neighbours will be pensioners. Elsewhere it's a typical suburban city with OK spots and some dreadful spots, it's just that they are often close to each other due to the limited size of the place.
The university is fine with a good reputation for education, but its influence is spreading in the city centre with student accommodation and the university's need for buildings being given priority by the council.
Make parking a priority of your property search in the city. I can't stress that enough.

Hayling is OK but not a great commute due to the bridge. If you walk or ride a bike/motorbike into work, then the small ferry to Eastney is a great shortcut off the west of the island.

There are only three routes into Portsmouth and onto Portsea Island. The whole A3/M27/M275 area can and does get wedged very easily from a minor traffic incident, especially at rush hour. It's one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the UK.

The whole of east Hampshire is expensive unfortunately.

FIL lives a couple of doors down from this

Quiet Cul de sac in easy reach of the A3M. Prices in Cowplain reasonable for location.

I'd forget Hayling if you're going to be comuting on and off the island at rush hour!

OP, don't discount Gosport if you're working a close enough distance to the docks, as you can get the foot ferry over for a couple of quid a day and cycle/bus from the other side.

Although parts of Gosport and the town centre are a sthole, 400k will get you a lovely house for the money in a quiet area close to the sea.

I live as far down the peninsula as you can get and it takes me about 30-40 mins to get to work in Port Solent.

I'd second farlington 😉
Quiet , parking is good , schools are great so resale is easy . Go for north of Havant Road , Drayton or Farlington . £400k will give you plenty of choice . I think it's a safe place for you money . Good selection of PH cars around along with the Abarth garage .
Southsea it won't be pensioners you're next to , more than likely students . Parking is dicey in most areas but it's a great place to be . I'd live there if the schools were any good and parking wasn't a pain .

I think you should try and go east of Portsmouth, the M27 is pretty bad most mornings and by going East you avoid some of the traffic. Perhaps Emsworth? It's a nice little village with a good variety of housing.

I live in Locks Heath. Take a look at locks heath, Salisbury, Warsash and Park Gate possibly Titchfield too.

About 15 mins to Portsmouth and the same into Southampton. 400k buys you 4 bed detached. Good schools, great motorway access, 3 mins to coast, lots of good pubs etc. Happy to give more info if you need it.

Hayling Island is a no no. One road in and out traffic nightmare.

There's a new development in Borley Park. A bellway development Swanwick and a few others in Hamble. plus lots of homes available around park gate/whiteley

I would say to locate a little nearer the hamble river so you have the choice of Southampton & Portsmouth for shopping etc. Portsmouth really isn't that great and a bit of a dive. Hamble main road is a traffic nightmare though. I'd suggest Borley Green. Swanick, Park Gate areas.

Sarisbury? Rather than Salisbury?

I suggest looking further east - Emsworth, Bosham, over towards Chi etc. Much nicer than to the west where its chockablock.
