It'll be a manual rather than hydrostatic/auto if it's a lever operation for drive.

My forward/reverse is a lever and hydrostatic, the hydrostatic units can start to fail when they get hot.

Axle replaced. Did both in the end....the right was the one that had sheared. The left had a faulty seal (could still have salvaged the axle but had the spare part here so thought I'd use it). Ironically the faulty seal probably helped it - the axle itself was constantly oiled. The one that sheared looked to have accumulated some rust and I think the hub and spacer gradually compromised the axle.

All fixed and leak free now. And with the added bonus of fresh oil. Just the slight problem that the clearance I thought I had between a new jubilee clip (to better secure the oil expansion tank) and the cooling fan wasn't quite enough. Still easy fix and even replacing the fan has still saved £500 quid on getting a pro outfit to fix it.

Pro outfit reckoned 3-4hr job to fit a new transmission. Took a numpty like me 5 hours but that included stripping the box.

Pre-dates mine but the principles will be the same.

- cutting deck : think that was sorted and it's just knowledge of how the switch works?

- PTO : lever up to engage on yours by the look of it. You could do with someone sitting in the seat while you look to see if the PTO belt is turning. Don't go sticking your fingers in there, or wear loose clothing around it etc smile . You should also hear it engage (additional whirring etc).

If the PTO (pulley under the seat) is working but it's not sweeping, it will be a PGC (powered grass collector) belt that's broken (side black covers on the PGC).

- emptying : again sorted before I think? The lever sticking out of the PGC over your left shoulder...lift and pull it towards you.

- drive lever : I don't have this (mine are foot pedals), but assuming it's connected to a hydrostatic gearbox the lever will have a mechanism that connects to an arm on the gearbox itself. It will be easier to see if you remove the rear right wheel. I would bet you've either got a bolt coming loose or the arm needs greasing etc.

It would probably also be worth changing the oil in the transmission if drive's been a bit flaky (again if a hydrostatic box).

Mine was a 2005 approx with a Honda engine and hydro transmission - that one looks much much older but in decent condition!

I thought mine was around 2005/2006 but looking at those pictures and comments above I suspect it may be newer (happy days smile).

OP - looking at the picture of the lever again and the slot it goes down, it will definitely connect more or less directly to one or two arms on the transmission case.

Thanks Murph
I thought it was down to connect the PTO -Doh!
Top up the hydrostatic - there was an empty beaker with the unit with traces of a red oil in it ATF? but looked for a filler with no success, just engine oil.
The lever by the right hand drive forward/backwards etc if you can imagine a gear linkage on a very worn 1970 Transit van...feels like it's connected with string and elastic bands
