It actually originated because of all the customer complaints we were getting about noise from external, free-standing Mitsubishi Ecodan ASHP's.
Thanks. So the external fan unit is likely the big source of interior noise, in your opinion? Didn't seem like it, but acoustics can be tricky. The agent mentioned it could be partially boxed in, subject to safety restrictions...

The complaints we got seemed to identify it as external noise, but of course where you have a system that connects everything via water filled pipes to the source of of a sound, it can come out anywhere.

Might be the pump you were hearing, though, rather than the fan: I wasn't there, obviously, so I wouldn't want to second guess your ears.

Yeah, must be a real challenge keeping these systems quiet. Any idea where installers usually site the pump?

Is there any way to gauge what is considered normal, acceptable volume level for a home with ASHP?

Thanks

I didn't pay that much attention to be honest - I just specified the system, it was the suppliers who did the detail design of the installation - but I think there may have been a couple of pumps (one to circulate flow from the external unit, the other to circulate flow from the indirect, internal cylinder), plus the compressor of the heat pump itself. I think we have a couple of installers of these systems on this forum, so doubtless someone will be along soon with chapter and verse.

I think the pump were usually fitted next to the cylinder, but as with all wet central heating systems, you could hear them running throughout the house.

No, there's no way to gauge acceptable volume. People have different levels of tolerance; some will happily sleep with the window open next to a motorway, others will go nuts at the background hum of electricity in a house.

We only get a hum from our Ecodan when the temperature drops at night time. We only hear it from our bedroom, and it isn't an obtrusive noise.

We learnt quite quickly that the best way to use an ASHP is to leave it on 24/7. We spend less on electricity than we did on elec & gas combined from our old house. Our present home was a new build (2012) and is extremely well insulated.
