no idea of his cricket preferences wink and he was certainly no trustafarian - he took the business and made a lot of money particularly around the development of Traveller's Cheques (Thomas Cook were early adopters with Circular Notes) - he was also passionately involved in education and left a large part of his money to the Ernest Cook Trust for educational purposes...

Interestingly (and more on topic) he planned to leave everything to the National Trust, but they only wanted the houses, not the land (hence my earlier comment), so he then said they could have nothing - and set up his own trust - eventually they negotiated and got some of the houses / estates and some went into the trust - very big around here as they own large chunks of land / villages locally
That’s very interesting. Why all the estates? What was his objective?

not entirely sure, will ask my friend when I see him next month - he used to be one of the land agents running the trust... I suspect it was because he was living through an era when families were struggling to keep their estate / house, but no-one else wanted them... the 1900s was a phenomenal century for the demolition of country houses, across England and Scotland, c. 1,600 houses were demolished, c. 1/6th of all large country houses, by the 50s they were coming down at the rate of over 1 a week... it was a radical change in the landscape
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_cou...

Ernest Cook was I believe concerned about this and so did his little bit to try and preserve houses and estates... ironically the Trust has its offices in the stableyard of Fairford Park, the house having been demolished! There is now the local school in the park...

It's in the address, which is enough for me, and probably an awful lot more people.

I mean you know when someone says "Hungerford", and the first thing that pops into your head is...

Well, the price explain why it hasn't shown up in our rightmove alerts as that's right in our target area smile

That is wonderful.
I'd be more than happy with the gatehouse in Pic 2

Today I'm giving Dartmouth a rest, and heading to Topsham, which is quite posh, but has recently had an Aldi open up, so it's not all bad. wink

This has dual listing from the same agent, the second being as "land" so there this the possibility the house will end up getting knocked down, which I think would be a bit of a shame...

Not sure I would go there before some of the other places for similar money that get listed here, but I do like it.

Not on a par with some (most) of the houses on the thread, but a 5-bed Victorian villa, stabling, an 11m sitting room and a sauna for £445k....

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...

Wife wanted to go and see it but it's just too grim up there in winter. Lovely place in the sunshine but pretty desolate in January. Plus I've become used to being in a village with a pub and a social life I don't have to drive to.
It's been for sale before at £595 then £545 so I wonder if the location is the only issue it has. Good VFM for someone though.

Like that. Shame about the nasty plastic windows, but easily resolved.

I think it's probate. Was rented out after it failed to sell 18 months ago and I guess they just want the cash now (supported by the use of a London based cut-price agent and pictures from the previous sale).

Sold, but peachy. Especially like the working clock tower. Assume first comment will be "I bet that floods".

Now I know this does not look like Real Estate Pawn on initial viewing of the photos, but I am trying to look past the amateur photo and description! So much so I am viewing next week! I keep being drawn back to this place so if nothing else it will satisfy my curioisity!
