I like the slipper launch outside, that's classy.
However I don’t think it is as nice as the place dreckly opposite on t’other side of the river. That was for sale a while ago ..... but as it was in the realm of £8M I don’t think it sold.......

I do quite see myself retiring to a place on the river....... I am quite taken with Great Canal Journeys !! Sloshing about on the river..... very me!!

Historically, brick buildings were often rendered to make them weatherproof.
... usually with a cement render which can cause more problems than it cures, unfortunately.
Yes, that was often the problem. Plus damage to the brick facing when the render was removed frown

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I don't recall Tillycorthie Mansion House, Aberdeenshire - £1.5m. It has one hell of a feature.

The central space has huge glass atrium and it's an original feature too.
Hmmm....rip the plants out and that'd make a nice garage and workshop! smile

It's a Giant green house. Not ideal storage for cars laugh Much less working inside during the summer!

I'm continuing my perambulations around Lincolnshire and walked past this earlier this evening.

Ancient mill situated in a car park anyone?

As a complete boaty novice what would one need to get from here to the Thames barrier and back safely without outside help, what kind of licence would this need and how much time would it take to acquire?

Cheers

I've always loved this house, it's on my old running route down to Bray lock. It was on the market about 5 years ago, listed at £3.5m, and the new owners had a huge amount of work done, inside and out. In terms of location I think it's better than the ones opposite because from this house you can walk along the riverside path or across the fields. Across the river, in the Fisheries Estate, there is no river access other than one's own garden frontage. The one point about this house that's not obvious from the photos is that the towpath/footpath runs between the main house grounds and the riverside garden. The footpath runs between the tall hedges visible in the pictures. I wouldn't see it as a problem but I guess that's why it's not £8m.

My understanding (which may be flawed) is that you don't NEED very much. You can hire narrow boats and gin palaces for week long holidays with only a few basic instructions. We had a very long narrowboat for a week with an hour of tutorial from the owner, and had no real worries travelling at about 3 mph...

If you're planning on messing about down near the Thames Barrier, or anywhere downstream of about Putney, there is no speed restriction, and a lot more of the bigger commercial stuff about. You might need some qualifications for that, but you'd certainly want some. Definitely.

You'd not want to be commuting from Taplow to Canary Wharf on a boat though, it'd take a wee while.

I took a narrow boat around the "aquatic ring-road" a couple of years back, clockwise up the Grand Union from Yeading to Limehouse, then down the Thames to Brentford. The river stretch was absolutely terrifying, like being a helpless pooh-stick. I don't know how I avoided all those bridges and hydrofoils.

They won't let you on the Thames without passing a VHF radio course. Frankly they shouldn't let anyone go near that downtown stretch without hands-on training,

If a complete boaty novice - I would suggest that a car would be better biggrin
As others have said - the bit of river further upstream is not a huge issue - but you would not want to mess around on the tidal parts of the Thames without experience - there are a lot of commercial boats / strong tides / etc. I am an experienced sea based powerboater / sailor type thingy and I would be cautious on that stretch of the Thames...

upper Thames - a child of 10 could manage, middle Thames - no issue for beginners with some common sense - Lower Thames - avoid!

Right - decor style normally runs through the house... normally.

here we have a bit of a mash-up. Not my idea of porn but I am sure it is someone's.... (all gets a bit surreal at pic #4)

But if you wanted an interesting bit of history, maybe this suits.....

Wow, what a contrast between the timeless grace of the Scottish house and the tastelessness of the other one......

Looks like they’ve turned a listed building into a soulless new build. Worst of both worlds surely?

By the quality of the furniture looks as if they ran out of money.
It's been on the market a few times recently, and as a rental, not exactly furnished to support the valuation!
It's a huge, st shed.

This just on today, not so far from us. Obviously in need of a serious freshen up internally, and the running costs could be pretty challenging.

We could block up the cellar and top floor and still rattle around in it.
