Another update....we bought a John Ryan Artisan Naturals medium mattress in December, and having slept on it for 3 weeks now, my back is definitely worse when I wake up than it was on our old mattress, I'm even waking up in the night with back pain which I didn't do before.

We are going to put our old mattress back on the bed for a few nights to see if it helps, but I think it is likely the JR is going to have to go back, which is disappointing as I was hoping it would give me a better nights sleep than our 10+ year old mattress. I think it may be that it is too soft for me. My wife thinks it is ok, but not a big difference given the cost.

We could swap it for another JR, but they don't give you the 60 day trial again (understandably) so whatever we swap it for we would be stuck with, so are betting going for a refund.

Not sure what to do now, wasn't that keen on the foam type Simba, Leesa etc, though noticed that the Emma got a Which Best Buy for 2017 so could do another trial. I guess we are going to have to visit John Lewis and some bed stores, but lying on a bed for 30 seconds isn't really going to tell you if a mattress works for you or not.
Thanks for update. We have just ordered a super_king origins pocket 1500.i wants aware they don't give you second trial. I can understand 8r,i just don't know.

We tried simba in john Lewis but found it too soft. We tried s John Lewis natural collection 4000 in store and it was very comfy (in 5 minute trial in store). But that was put of my price range and wasn't sure their return policy for mattress. I saw which best buy but I am a bur dubious of mattress reviews as its such a personal thing, especially for foam type mattress as some can get very hot and stuffy...
Hope u find a mattress you are happy with. I will post back once we get our John Ryan next month.

If it helps we are still really happy with our Otty. From what I've read, and comparing it to a Simba at John Lewis, it's a bit firmer than the other similar mattresses.

Might be worth a try?
Thanks, will try Simba again at John Lewis and see how it feels so can decide if we would like a bit firmer etc.

I guess we have nothing to lose trying one of the mail order foam ones, but neither of us were that keen initially.

There are so many to choose from Otty, Simba, Eve, Emma etc, but the Casper and Leesa seem to get the best reviews.

Those reviews highlight what a minefield getting a new mattress is. One says the Leesa feels cooler than others, another says it's quite warm & not best for those who get hot at night. One says the Casper isn't as good as the Leesa for side-sleepers, another says the Casper is better than the Leesa.

I thought I wanted a Leesa, but now I'm not sure & while the 100 day trial is a big help I'd rather not have to haul multiple mattresses up & down stairs.

We're 21 days in with our Vispring Baronet, the bad backs/hip aches which we had in our previous bed have gone so i think we'll not be returning it.

With Otty you can request a 2 man team to deliver it to the room of your choice (for free IIRC), not sure if they send the same to collect.

I don't find the Otty too hot, and I sleep on my side while my wife sleeps on her back, and both find it ok.

When I was looking, Otty didn't seem to get as much press as the others but the customer reviews were all good which is why I went for it. It was cheaper than most others too (especially with Quidco cashback and free pillows or £50 off offer).

Is there a reason that all these foam mattress companies seem to have sprung up, 'scuse the pun, all of a sudden with their funky names and right on marketing? Not so long ago it seemed the only foam mattress available was the Tempur or you went for a traditional type you ended up with something with a name like the Springamathing 3000. Thoughts?

You had exactly the same symptoms I had in the past and it took me a number of mattresses to find one that was soft but firm as well as cool throughout the night. I've mentioned it on her but try the Ergoflex - it literally changed my life and available on a trail from memory.

Thanks for the advice, Ive had a look at these, they seem to have been around longer than the others. The reviews on Trustpilot, Feefo etc almost look too good (read fake) and I came across a few forum discussions online implying the same but who knows.

They do sound good though, and I take your advice as genuine, but there also doesn't seem to be as much material about them as some of the newer ones, independent reviews, youtube vids etc.

This whole mattress buying malarkey is a nightmare, with paid for reviews/referrals, biased or fake reviews, companies adding their own reviews and even suing individuals, you really don't know who to trust.

It's almost a case of just pick the one you like the look/sound/price of, for all these the mattress-in-a-box companies.

Anyway, John Ryan can't pick up my current mattress until the end of the month, and I haven't got room to have two spare king size mattresses lying about, so no rush to make a decision. The Christmas offers appear to be finishing, so might just hang on until the next round of offers whenever that is.

I take all positive reviews with a pinch of salt and focus on the negative (or lack of) if I cannot get referrals from people I trust.

I can speak from experience of having 2 of these for the last 10 years , that I wouldn't go anywhere else (even a Tempur one which was 4 times the price, ruined me).

I just think they are not the best at marketing compared to some companies but their product is fantastic. (BTW way i have no affiliation - or even met anybody from this company before anyone asks wink )

Bit of a bump please.

I got a superking John Ryan origins 1500 and it just didn't work for us with me getting back pain. Looking at one of these "bed in box materess". I know these things are subjective but am looking for a mattress which I don't "sink into" and which doesn't get hot in summer. Any feedback highly appreciated..

Thanks

Thanks
A tempur. I’ve had one for a year, and I sleep with a 4.5 tog quilt regardless of the weather, and I’ve never woken up too hot, sweaty etc. You don’t sink into it but it’s so comfy from any way you sleep in it, plus hypoallergenic and no dust mites etc

I’ve got the cloud but they do others for fatter people.

As I always do when mattress threads are posted, I will recommend Latex Sense. Had ours 6 years now, pocket sprung with natural latex top. Still in as good shape as when it got delivered, zero edge roll-off etc. In another 300 years when it needs replaced, I'll be getting another from them,

In my experience the memory foam type mattresses have the same sort of characteristic where they form a hollow to fit your body when you lie on them & it doesn't spring back very quickly so you end up with a very dead feeling surface. When you turn over you basically have to roll out of the dip & the bed re-forms around you. I had an Ergoflex & while it was comfortable I just didn't like the feel of the memory foam so it went back. You can try this sort of mattress at several places including John Lewis who stock the Simba (I believe).

Following recommendations from here I tried a latex mattress from Latexsense:
https://www.latexsense.co.uk/

It's much more responsive while still being supportive & I haven't found it hot, unlike memory foam. There are a number of alternatives of differing prices but if you can get to their showroom in North London you can try some of them. They have a 105 day exchange policy for thier own brand matresses but it works a bit differently to the other box vendors. You try for 30 days & can change for another type (may cost more though) & can do this twice to try three matresses in total. If you aren't happy at the end you pay the return courier costs.

The other bed I liked was the Premier Inn from Hypnos but to try this one out you'll heed to book in for a night.

Just an update from me - had the Otty for a few nights now and it is fantastic! Only had the pillows 1 night (I forgot to put the code it for them but they sent them out next day anyway) and again, very impressed.

I can't imagine we will be sending it back with the 100 nights trial - it's at least as comfortable as other than cost twice as much.

Customer service is excellent too.
Apologies for the thread resurrect but...

My mattress is circa 14 years old (Silent night thing) and I suspect its best days are behind it now.

My daughter has an Otty and swears by it, but she's only had it around 6 months.

What's your yr+ view now.

Is it still supportive and comfortable? (me and the wife whilst not heavyweights are reasonably weighty)

Is it clammy in the summer with the blue gel layer

How about the Otty pillows, how do they hold up?

Really just a summary of how you feel about it, good and bad, thanks.

I've a Leesa and find is very comfy, my only complaint is that it is heavy and has no handles to awkward to move if you need to decorate or something.

I tried the Otty - very firm but it immediately solved my back ache, unfortunately my wife sleeps on her side and cannot spend a night on it so I've just booked it's return.

Been reading these threads for it's replacement - TBH as we have a super king bed I'm tempted to just buy two 3' singles

We bought a JL topper previously... but we've since upgraded to a super king and I'll be buggered if I'm buying another one to get over a mattress that I can send back.
