is it easy to calculate the cost of leaving an electrical device switched on permanently?

I.e. from the watt/amp/volt details written on the back of a radio or TV can it’s electric consumption be calculated

Yes.

Take the kw consumption

Calculate the kw/h and the number of hours

Multiply that By the price per kW and bob’s your uncle

1.5kw fire on for 3 hours = 4.5kwh

Approx 14p per kwh = 4.5 x 14p = 63p

perfect, thanks smile

Was looking at all these "smart home" devices and was wondering how much it would actually cost just to have them sitting there (mostly) doing nothing!

Never mind the nominal power consumption from the manual - it's probably guesswork. Just get one of these or similar...

Put your tariff's price/kWh in, plug it all in, and come back a few days later. Job jobbed.

The other approx rule of thumb for 24x7 loads, is that 1w is £1 a year

But you wouldn't leave your Telly on 24 x 7? I'm thinking OP wants to know the standby costs?
