We have yet to see / speak to the neighbours so don't have any view yet as to the effect on neighbourly relations.
You have been very pragmatic... not sure I would have been so kind!Taking the long view, if you are now accepting the offer, I'd drop a bottle of wine round and wish them a happy new year to draw a line under it.
The reality is that the OP didn’t roll over, the neighbours didn’t get away with their theft ( which it became when the mistake was pointed out and they didn’t immediately return what they had taken). It’s very likely the OP would have been replacing many of the appliances, none of them had warranties and if the neighbours are like the average Briton then the appliances would have been utterly septic and in need of burning anyway so taking a £1000 contribution towards their replacement seems better than nothing and I don’t agree with others that this now signals the OP’s bunghole is now open to trade from the neighbours.

For goodness sake, mate. That's just so last century.
I am currently sitting in my office looking out of the window, and about 200 yards away I can see the office of one of the consultants that advises the company. A few days ago I sent him a document that I wanted his advice on. Very simple question.
So far this week I've had four emails from his PA asking me to reply by return email to inform her what time would be suitable for him to call me on the phone, so that she can check whether he will be able to phone me at that time.
The world has gone mad.

Forgive my simplistic, simpleton view, but surely the reply to such an email is along the lines of
"our office hours are 9-5 Monday to Friday, and I usually take lunch between 12:30 and 13:00. If you call between these times and I'm able to take your call, I will do. If not, you'll have to try again later" ?
Or am I being a bit dense?

Looking at it another way, if someone offered you £1k for your crappy old kitchen appliances so you could go out and buy new ones, you’d probably bite their hand off as you would never achieve that selling them on gumtree/ebay
I wouldn't - it's a bleedin' nightmare choosing appliances, it's a task I really hate. There's so much choice of almost identical machines from the same few manufacturers with little logic in their features vs cost. Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
