Boilerjuice are unable to quote due to demand. Local online price is 119ppl plus VAT.

I've got enough to the end of June and I've just reduced the thermostat by a degree and shortened the hot water timings.

Many years ago I fitted an air sourced heat pump to a large house (underfloor heating) which already had an oil boiler.

The owner went from 100 litres of oil a week to more like 600 litres a year.

One problem with an air sourced unit is the performance drops off as the temperature drops, so a heat pump has to "oversized" to cater for this.

However if a relatively small heat pump is fitted in parallel with an oil boiler - it is much cheaper and easier to install.

I reckoned the heat pump did about 80% of the work, the oil boiler being used as a top up on really bad days.

Again, specification is an issue - but get it right and there can be considerable savings for a relatively modest cost.

I think hybrid systems are available, aren't they?

Turn the Aga off. Friends who have theirs turned on all complain of excessive oil consumption. Ours is an ornament.

This thread has made me feel much better about our consumption. 3000sqft 520yr old farmhouse. No double glazing (secondary on much of the house though) and plenty of breathability... We get through 3700 litres or so a year.

Was nearer 6000 when we moved in but diagnosed a faulty 2-way valve. Fixing that dropped consumption massively.I check every part of the heating system twice a year now (2 way valves, TRVs etc, October and April).

Thermostat is set at 21deg. Goes on during the day if needed but generally not (women need to be conditioned that 21deg is not Arctic temps and that steady temps inside are just that and don't need fiddling with smile ). Each degree higher makes a lot of difference to heating large spaces.

We do have thermal solar for water. I've never been convinced it's worth the (previous owner's) outlay but it does save a bit in summer (assuming it doesn't need looking at).
Just wanted to pick up on the fact that you live in a 520 year old house?

Impressive.

Recently moved to an oil fired modernised bungalow. Fairly well insulated we think (yet to be proved).
Still working out heated square footage as we have a garage block with a separate condensing boiler serving the accommodation above.

Filled the 1250 litre tank in October and again at the end of December. Between fills used 1000 litres 12.2 litres per day to be exact.

Problem is last time I bought oil in the 90’s it was about 9 p per litre.
Last fill was 62 p per litre!!!!
That's almost as bad as my terribly insulated H configuration bungalow. We are currently looking at 3200L/year, from Dec to Feb did 14L/day. That's with our thermostat at 17 degrees from 7:30-6pm, and basically off the rest of the time. I've now turned it down to 16, and 13 at night time. Probably going to get cavity wall insulation as there isn't much else I can do other than replace the boiler (which I also plan to do). Fun times.
