Basically:

Oil is generally cheaper than LPG (except in the oil crisis)

Oil boilers are generally more reliable

Oil boilers aren't great combis and they cost more

I personally prefer combis but in large homes the time delay becomes a pain for sinks / basins combined with oil being cheaper to run - I went with an oil system boiler.

They're bending you over. Try Avantigas for a quote. I've been going back and forth between them and Calor for years, you can usually get a decent deal to switch. Currently 31.5p with Calor.
Avantigas are 53% cheaper - I will most likely go with them. Thank you.

My own stupidity for not thinking to change supplier - I wrongly assumed I was stuck with Calor.

My first round of prices are in and hope it is of use for others.

Avanti Gas:
28p per litre plus VAT (£66+VAT Standing charge)
Fixed for 12 months, cap of 3p per 6 months in 2nd year

Calor:
32.3p per litre plus VAT (£60+VAT Standing charge) Plus £250 Credit
No mention of fixed period

Flogas:
37p per litre plus VAT (not sure on standing charge)
Fixed for 6 months

Any more worth trying?

To be honest, I'm so hacked off with Calor for fisting me on price after 10 years as a customer (admittedly a stupid one for not checking) that I'm happy to go elsewhere.

I've requested a quote out of thoroughness but the reviews are less than complimentary.

I am with countrywide. They came in cheapest when I was trying last. They have been ok until the last order which went wrong due to heavy snow. I also gave up with calor due to the fact they did not offer there best price when asked but would only match when you had a better quote. I did out of spite make the send me 2 quotes in writing just for fun. The whole process is really annoying they should publish prices like every other utility supplier does, then we could pick the cheapest and go with it.

It’s bloody awful what you’ve been paying. Those are retail pump prices by the looks of things?

I don’t think lpg is part of ofgem and I suspect there is a lot of bandit behaviour in the industry.

They were investigated a while back but the regulator deemed no action was required!!

There's a small development of 12 new houses going up in our village.

The developers are putting a single underground LPG tank shared between the properties. I expect each house has a meter for billing purposes and resupply is automated but what happens with the price/contracts? If it's Calor's standard silly prices and you want to change, I guess everyone on the development would need to agree?

There'll be a management company for the shared areas. They manage the contract. Some of the residents will probably be directors.

As a round up to the original post.

After waiting nearly 2 months for a top from Flogas that the previous owner ordered before we completed and getting down to 7% left, we received a lovely welcome pack and thank you letter for joining us from Flogas for 46p per litre and £95 standing charge we told them where to go and signed up with Avanti who honoured the 28p per litre and have been a pleasure to deal with.
