It’s my old mans 65th birthday in a couple of months and he has everything he has ever wanted/needed, quite literally! We tend to do experiences and stuff for presents, but we’re exhausting that list now so been thinking about things that ‘mean’ something, rather than things that ‘are’ something (if that makes sense?!)

He has this lump of oak that is from a tree he took out of my grandads (his dads) garden when he died. He’s always wanted to do something nice with it, but never got round to it and now he hasn’t got the patience to do so! I’m thinking about pinching a bit of it and me and my nipper making him a nice carved pint mug out of it or something.

If I could carve it out, what would be a suitable coating for it that a) would protect the wood for as long as possible and b) wouldn’t leave an odd taste in whatever he drank from it?

I think it'd end up as decorative only. Beer should only ever be drunk from a glass, a straight one. (or thin glass as Michael Caine describes it in Get Carter)

He’d drink it from a sock if it’s the only thing he had biggrin. Know what you mean though, but the fact that his grandson would’ve had a hand in it would mean loads, even if it only ended up as a door stop!

Tung oil is food safe.

How about a chopping board?

As Vaud said, why not a chopping board, or ornament/fruit bowl.

A glass/mug is an odd choice.

Great idea though, nice to do something that has meaning 👍

I guess the size of the "lump" of oak will define whether it ends up as a mug or a chopping board - they're fairly distinctive sizes/shapes...

Bear in mind it'll shrink, warp and split as it seasons - this may be an issue for a mug, especially.

Didn’t think about the warping side of it. Hmmm, perhaps a rethink is in order.

The reason for a pint mug is that he and my mum go away in their caravan a lot - like 5-6 months of the year. Mums got a ‘special’ wine glass that was an old perfume bottle that (I think) her Dad fashioned years ago, so was going for a sort of matching set.
