I'm planning to build a lean to as a storage area at the side of my house, the neighbour has done something similar & its been roofed with EPDM.
Whats the general consensus ?
The area will be 15 metres long & 2.5 metres wide.
Any tips ?
Yeah its decent. Just done a quick online check and for that area it would be about 600 quid, not exactly cheap.Whats the general consensus ?

Its easy enough to put on, there are a few decent guides on youtube.
Funnily enough, i was on a Govt Agency Roof Monday, you would think HM Govt knew better.
Adhesive failure
Multiple patching
Whole roof is live
EPDM will last an eternity, ask the manufacturer what the warranty is on the adhesives...
I see roofs like this at least once a month. A DIY installer will take more care, but it will fail, sooner than other systems.
To purchase, Firestone as an example, is £4.50 a M2, which is why the cowboy roofers love it.
Forgot to mention, the roof in the pics is 2 years old...

Thats the problem .. the cost. Its not cheap. Its easy enough to put on, there are a few decent guides on youtube.
Seen the videos, i'll have a go at anything, usually i do ok
What you aren't being told about EPDM is that you can order it in one piece up to 15 x 30m. It's pretty difficult to make a one piece sheet roof leak, but yes a lot of things in life get incorrectly blamed for failure when it was 'user error'. I laid a lot 10 - 15yrs ago and haven't had one single call back. They were simple one sheet installations, If it had a joint in it I would have thought twice about fitting it or done it like they used to do lead.
The other one which never seems (seams?!) to be mentioned on here is Vinyl, that's worth looking into too.

Vinyl ? And how did you detail 1 sheet ? How would you go about installing a 35 sq metre sheet in one piece ? The other one which never seems (seams?!) to be mentioned on here is Vinyl, that's worth looking into too.
18mm osb is fine. You can get EPDM for that size in one piece. The premium grade membrane is a bit thicker than standard but is a nicer finish as it’s thicker so you might as well use that. It’s a bit more money but worth it IMO. Ignore that Eddie fart guy, I don’t think he has a clue what he’s talking about when he says £200 as he has obviously not factored in the cost of the adhesives, edge trims etc.
If you’re doing it in one piece you don’t have to worry about seams failing. If it is seamed properly it doesn’t fail anyway, it’s just the ones where the seams haven’t been done properly (like the pics he posted) that fail.

I love this place for this ! , I've got a project coming up I'll need advice on as I've been out of the trade to long , I'd love to use my normal torch on 350 but it's under a thatch and I threw my bitumen boiler away 20 years ago , I'd take the Eddie fart guys advice over most on here . I'll post some pics up when i get the keys but it's gonna be some form of flat roof , I was considering lead with a roll and step to keep in in keeping with the property and because I know how to do it .
Safe to Torch. Many self adhesive felts with hot air welded lap now. Modified bitumen with lower melting point. But the pot and jug would of been better.

wot about GRP
First thing I thought of as years ago I looked into it and did think it was the way forward . However , there's no gutter on the thatch roof and I'm covering in a courtyard between a two storey and single storey building, so the noise issue rears its head , especially when it's going to be the feature open plan kitchen - dining area . Hence why I'm thinking lead , dull the noise a bit and I know I can do it myself , by which I mean working alone and not paying for the labour , I have previous for working alone on projects one man shouldn't even consider ! lj04 said:
Eddie, do you believe most of the problems with EPDM are caused by people badly gluing where rolls have been used. Do you know if these wide pieces ( where rolls have been "welded" in the factory) last longer
The problem with the factory weld is when you have a massive sheet of rubber on site, it will need a lot of dragging around to get it aligned, this will always stress any joint. You need perfect lab conditions/prep for the glue to work. With single ply, most companies will custom make sizes to suit, IKO recently made some 6m wide rolls for a Sainsburys depot, craned onto the roof, then you still need 12 blokes to drag the thing into place !
DIY epdm on a shed or lean to etc is fine, if there will be minimal damge when it fails, it’s worth a go. It annoys me the prices they charge for it, more so because i know what the cost price is.
We ripped 11 big roofs off last year ( 800 m2+) all, down to lap failure, heat expansion. And as the pics, it’s only January, and we’ve already got another through the door !
