How big are peoples lawns with these motors, presumably 1000sqm (1/4 acre) upwards? Or do people have a ride one for a 200-400 sqm lawn? Just wondering.

I mow a 2 acre paddock and maybe 1/2 an acre of lawns with our 4wd 27hp ride on. The paddock can be a challenge as the grass grows longer than ideal before we mow it. I am tempted by a tractor and slasher but I don't currently have anywhere to store it all.

I did recently put 4 tractor/ dumper truck type tyres on the thing. Problem is now, it goes hard but when it's stuck, it's really stuck!

You can get a few PTO mower deck ride on's out here in Oz, but they aren't cheap. They will demolish more plants though!

Bought this and it is soooo much better than the iseki it replaced, probably do about 4 acres with it, £20k though eek Husqvarna p525d commercial grade

We use a flail mower attached to 700cc grizzly quad for some other acres we have and that flies through the longer stuff with ease, bottle cutters are better than knives, these motorised flails are about £2500, + quad obviously.. expensive looking after lawns!

not that big. Just quick and fun, whole plot is only just over 1/3rd of an acre. I cut the old boys garden next door also though.

Most people buying ride ons would be more than 1/4 acre. Don’t think I’ve ever sold one to as small as 200-400 sq m other than maybe the odd little 25” one.

1/2 to 3/4 acre sites less the house would be fairly normal here in Northern Ireland.

What would you recommend for 22 acres with maybe 30% of that being hilly?

Also, how long do you think it would take? Any experience with robo mowers? I hear Edinburgh is using them for the parks now.

Thanks

The deciding factor is how much time you want it to take and how often you’re going to cut it. We’ve got about three acres....I invested in something that is overkill because the paddock (never mind the more formal lawns)was taking two hours to cut because I inherited a ste ride with a relatively narrow cutting deck which collected grass. When was grass was growing at it’s fastest I’d have to cut about every five or six days with the ride on. I changed it for commercial grade machinery which mulches the grass and cuts the paddock in less than half an hour...the paddock now looks like a lawn because it’s getting cut by a proper piece of kit, and I don’t have mountains of grass cuttings to compost.

We don’t supply any commercial stuff. The only think I’d have experience of that big is a 60” zero turn which is 6k off. We fit a good few robots but again Husqvarnas biggest one will only cut 5000 sq meters. I did do a big house last year that took 3 of them.

We have the same, we get the farmer to do about 10acres of the outer fields, i use a flail on 4 or 5, husqvarna takes on 5 for driveways etc and the actual gardens for each house i have a club cadet that collects the clippings, basically the machines get smaller the closer the grass gets.

If the grass is lawn type smooth then I believe they can be used in large areas successfully, using several robots plus docking stations working together. However bear in mind they'd all be out cutting most of the time so not really much good in a public area or with animals & animal poo around etc.

It took 7 years of moaning about back pain, worked though biggrin

There’s some pretty cool attachments actually, the flail would be useless compared to the quad though, its a very good Combo, fast, comfortable, quick and very low maintenance.

Fair enough. smile

I'm still prevaricating, but bid on a Grillo climber 10 last night that was expensive but way too cheap for what it is. Thankfully the seller pulled the auction at the last minute as it would be massive overkill. biggrin I have just found a Husqvarna tractor that comes with a difflock but a bigger deck than I need/want for access. And still mulling over the OP's zero turn suggestion.

Grillon have a good rep here, i tested the zero turn ferris but traction was awful if a bit damp, hard to control for me to but i guess you get used to them, club cadet do a zero turn with a steering wheel..

That's my worry with the zero turn. On cross slopes you're relying on the downhill drive wheel to hold the whole machine and if that goes there's no saving it.

Yeah, kind of - it was from a dealer who didn't really know what it was. It's basically the predecessor of this:

https://www.as-motor.uk/product/as-915-sherpa-2wd/

21hp v twin B&S, difflock and only 250 hours on the clock.

Didn't flinch at going straight up through this:
