I think you're being a little harsh, I had some tough times financially when young. Fortunately with some luck, a little prudence and some planning we've seen our way through. Not everyone does, well done op for choosing to live debt free.

Life's a compromise.
Indeed. But don’t blame others when you over borrow, spend it etc and get into trouble. No one puts a gun to your head in the country to borrow. The earlier posts read as if the OP is blaming others for his personal decisions and further that this has been a driver in determining where and how he lives.
DA, I wholeheartedly agree with you that it is the borrowers responsibility to manage their borrowing responsibly, no issue there. I evidently didn't, but the borrow/ spend culture made/makes it far too easy. You phone the bank up about a Direct Debit, and the call handler is paid to push you these loans. At one point I was in a Saxo VTR, and had such a call, 'hmmm, it got me thinking' that lovely little £6000 172 Cup I saw this morning, could it be THAT easy?'

Where I do have beef is that banks will also often irresponsibly lend, proven by 2008. When the pack of cards came tumbling down for me there was no sharing of the blame, or plans offered to help me find my way through it, just them wanting to close me down.

I vividly remember one conversation with First Direct (HSBC owned, at the time, if not still) when all this was hitting the fan. I was at a low eb because of this and various other reasons. In a scripted fashion she said 'First Direct have a responsibility to loan responsibly' I shut her down pretty quickly (not that it got me anywhere...) with 'who the hell do you think you are, the Americans have just announced that they are taking HSBC to court for IRRESPONSIBLE sub-prime lending, and you want to preach at ME about responsible lending?!'

Poor girl, I probably wasn't fair on her.

Edit. Just as an add DA. You mentioned 'this has been a driver in determining where and how he lives'

This is in part true. That said, we are largely enjoying living here, we're having (usually) great fun renovating the place, living in the moment, and enjoying life. There are compromises, but life is never perfect. Perfection is a fallacy. I dare say we'll return to Southwell at some point, but for now we're enjoying the countryside life.

Trust me - given the feedback you've had on your house, you really don't want to open that one up.......

Perhaps because this is a primarily a car site and not a wedding site?
You chose to have a car cover as your avatar, I choose to have one of my wife and I. No right or wrong.

It's a car site, yet this thread is discussing PP for a porch. Not very car like, no?

Oh dear, very droll. The tangents this thread is taking is pretty high, even for Pistonheads. I'm actually getting a little fed up of it.

There have been (imho) rather too many unpleasant and mean spirited jibes.
In response to an unpleasant and mean spirited (not to mention snobbish) approach by the OP, perhaps?

Again IMHO, but NIMBYism is a selfish and antisocial trait, which deserves to be put down. We have done so rather mildly, all things considered, I thought?
For saying his neighbour is a tight arse?
I'm not really sure what your problem is Equus.

Snobbish, please point out where?

As mentioned above, for saying our neighbour is a tight arse, which is fact!
For being open that our house cost all of £80k, when PH is full of members with £million pads.
For wishing to be sympathetic and Victorian period with our 1875 home, which you rudely described as a 'very average house, on a very average road, in a very average village'
For mentioning that our door, which my (perfectionist) wife spent 6 months deliberating over gets admiring glances and comments
For saying that my 'home' town is the best area in Notts, which you then tried to belittle with street views of the lowest price roads, as per examples I gave - BTW, have you yet found a finer Nottinghamshire house than the £2million Southwell one I posted, or would that be a step down against your wishful rhetoric?
For saying we don't live in Mansfield, because we don't thankfully, because it's a dump.
For admitting I cocked up with debt in my younger years, a snob would never admit to running out of money!
For stating that we don't want a crapper enclosed in a wooden structure inches away from our front door, quite frankly because it's disgusting.

I'm all ears. Either back your statement up or fk off.

fk this, I've had enough. I'll be getting the mods to close this thread.

BTW, if someone makes such a sweeping statement as the one Equus did, I am in turn well within my rights to defend it, especially when he is talking crap

If anyone is interested in the outcome (instead of spreading bile) I'll update this on our home renovation thread.
