. Plus when it's raining it has the added benefit of less staff hanging around so you can get more stuff into the non-recyclables skip without being questioned hehe
hehe yup, also lunchtime and just before they shut seem to have the least amount of nosey staff.

My local tip in Rochdale still takes anything, including tyres and rubble and doesn't bother about bringing in trailer loads of the stuff, no charge.

However looking at some of the horror stories on here I suspect tips like this are very much in the minority and are on borrowed time, councils are forever looking at ways to save cash/mulct the public.

The thing is that it promotes fly tipping and when you're paying a few grand in council tax every year and getting nothing for it then it's particularly galling.

Luckily with regard to garden waste they accidentally gave us two of the 240l garden waste bins. which are collected weekly which is very handy. If they start taking the piss then there's also the option of burning stuff.

Hope my local tip doesn't start some of the shenanigans on here.

The staff are great at my local tip, very helpful, with no limitations apart from Asbestos and Creosote, they even helped me lug an old VW beetle engine into the metal recycling bin.

The only downside is there is usually some moaning beardy type, loudly moaning about what other people are chucking out.

Don't want to curse it, but my tip is open 363 days of the year, takes almost anything and the lads there will always help you unload your car if you're struggling. They're even quite good on potholes around here, shame that I have to live so close to Basildon to get these luxuries thumbup
Where's that, Pitsea?

Won't last. The one in Billers was great, now they only take a few things.

They are no longer allowed to help people with stuff out of their cars, due to health and safety.
I hate that phrase, it's always used as an excuse. Yes, they're probably advised not to help people lift bulky items because there is a risk of injury and the employer's liability insurance unlikely covers it. You can summarise it as 'health and safety' but there's a genuine reason for them not to help.

Cutting the sidewalls is dead easy, it's cutting the belt (with it's reinforcing steel wires) into sections that causes problems.
Ahh but if you cut the sidewall out then you can fold up the treaded section and tape it up with rape tape and the whole tyre fits in your household bin - not that I have........

I don't have an issue with them refusing car loads of building waste - that's what a skip is for.

My Council insists on a permit scheme for vans - which is fine - but then restricts them to weekdays 12-2

I drive past it on my way to and from work but I'm not allowed in.

There is no reason given why this is the case.

I can't get much crap in an MX5 or RX7 and why should I have to cover them in crap when I have a bloody van !

I can understand some of the restrictions, and yes it is a small tip (though the area is getting more populated by the day). The nearest 'big' one, by the time you've got in and out, would be a 70-80 minute round trip. The one thing that hits the most is 'DIY waste'. A few months ago I went to dispose of one window, and was only just allowed in. Tomorrow I plan to visit to take the remains of my old decking, which is DIY waste. Will they take it?
Buy an incinerator bin - solved my fencing and decking disposal issues, burns clean with minimal smoke and you can’t beat a real fire of an evening

I was joking about the tyres but I like your idea for growing vegetables.

I know biggrin

The tyres stacker approach for spuds works great, start the chits in earth and then add more earth and tyres as required as you keep covering the new growth, get a lot of spuds in a compact area (like tower block living)

I believe this is the case.

Would anyone know the best way to cut tyres up, simply so that it's easier to transport them to the correct disposal facility?
I've heard an angle grinder with a cutting disc works reasonably well, but it does generate quite a bit of smoke and stinks. So I've heard.
A reciprocating saw with a good blade would be my thinking, or a jigsaw.
I can tell you from experience that a reciprocating saw doesn't work! Well, it worked for a few mins and then the main drive wheel started spinning freely on the motor shaft. On that basis I think a jigsaw would be hopeless.

Annoyingly by chance I called in at a more major tip (but still same council area) and they took tyres no problem - had a container full on 'em.

I'd kept two that were decent as spares after I switched to All-Seasons during a wheel refurb. But of course I never needed to use them.

It seems like a good idea at the time to hold onto tyres for that track day and before you know it ,you have a dozen knocking

around, all of which you really wouldn't want to drive on.

No probs - it also means you can destack layer at a time so you don't have to harvest them all at once biggrin

I use slicks on the track car - the tyre place that changes them over for me will not take them so when they are down to cords I have to take them to the "recycling centre" (opposite the tyre place I use which is handy) They used to take no more than 4 at a time, then dropped down to no more than 2 per visit so I walked over with two and drove there with the other two wink They then dropped down to one per visit/week (which I circumvented by walking over with one and then used different vehicles to drop of the others)

Now it's £4 a tyre so I cut out the side walls fold the carcass over and duct tape into a flat ish lump and it all goes in the household waste bin
