I put in 30mm artificial grass a couple of years ago, cost about £10 per sq m.

2 years on looks great. You need to do a bit more than normal grass to keep the leaves and general crap off (because they don’t degrade in the same way on astro), but otherwise it’s fantastic.

You can spend more, but I honestly don’t see any need.

Very quick question how does this stuff stand up to dog poo/wee? got a Husky and Northern Inuit both have made a right mess of the grass (very muddy in winter and its not recovered).

Thinking seriously about artificial stuff now.
A friend of mine runs a dog-sitting business from her home on a full-time basis, there are always a fair number of dogs there.
2 years ago she had her lawns replaced with astro for exactly the same reasons, last time I was there there's no discoloration, or any issues related to canine usage!
Dogs trust use it their compounds too.

Had some for over a year now and as long as you get the hose out and clear up after your dogs it looks like new still. However, dog pee does stink and I’ve currently got some detergent coming from Amazon to dilute and spray the fake grass with.

Will probably do it once a month while the weathers nice. Not needed when it rains a lot obviously.

No regrets on losing a real lawn here. wavey

Its certainley something I'm thinking of doing as my lawn is awful and talking to the new neignbours, its a problem in the road, not just mine. The next door neighbour has already spent out on replacing the original lawn laid in 2012, when he moved in 3 years ago, and that has already become a mess in that time. The neighbour on the other side of him has had the same problem. The houses were built in 2012, and despite being west facing the fences, and trees, and garages mean a lot of the grass areas are in shade all the time....and no doubt the soil used when built is cheap poor quality stuff full of rubbish.
Both of them have joined forces to get a good deal on 2 being done at the same time and asked if I wanted to make it 3 but loosing my job as a result of the virus, and not likely to find another one for quite some time, I've had to pass.
But it will be interesting to see the quality and look of both of them once they have been laid. I'm hoping I will be in a position to do something next year - virus situation permitting.

Anybody willing to share how much their grass was fitted and rough size? pics welcome.

Waiting for an estimate next week for my "small" back garden

There was a humungous amount to dig up and get rid of before laying the bases etc. I'm not that far from you.

We did about 140sqm last year, best thing we ever did tbh.

But we do have 7 dogs smile

35/40mm "St Andrews" we got, did it all ourselves for under £5k iirc.

Dog pee can smell, but there is a fluid you can get that you just spray on with a hose and it degrades the pee and gets rid of the smell. Its also bloody easy to get the poo up, even the sloppy joes. And a huge reduction in the dust in the house.

Wouldn't have a real lawn again, not with dogs anyway.

I ended up buying 3 bags of large compost from BQ and some grass seed. Lawn looks ok for now!

Yeh I'd do that as well but the section that is annoying me is right outside the door where its always damp, dogs are destroying it even when dry.

How sturdy is this stuff when it comes to dogs?

I used to have a semi-acceptable lawn and I now have The Somme.

The issue isn't the dog crapping on it or running about on it, it's the fact that whenever he toilets he does a kind of paw 'wheelspin' (covering his scent I guess) which kicks up the grass.

Artificial would seem to solve my issue, but does it stand up to digging and paw-spinning?

It starts at around £30 per sqm just for the turf itself. Add on all the labour to dig up the previous stuff up, the sleepers to act as a retaining border, MOT1 and sand and then the labour and it very quickly adds up. A team of 3 did it in 5 days from breaking ground, there's no way I could have done the same

One surprising thing is that we do still get weeds growing, these are blowing in on the wind and settling on top though so it just means keeping on top of them and gently pulling before they root in too strongly.

As others have said, the problem for me is the smell of wee when the sun hits it. Jeyes fluid was recommended but hasn't cleared the smell completely.

I just use a brush to clear leaves and blossom that fall throughout the year.

When we had ours done 5 yrs ago, about 45sq/m of fairly deep pile stuff, it worked out about £50 sq/m laid, we had it done at the same time as other work though included as part of larger landscaping job.

Had first quote £2000-2500 depending on what grass I go for.

We've got 7 setters and its stood up just fine so far, apart from the edges. We made the mistake of putting a gravel / stone border along one edge, and one of the dogs loves sniffing and digging at them, which means that in places he's pulled it up. I'm now thinking of taking that out and putting a hardwood strip along it to secure the edge completely.

Well Welshbeef did his best to ruin this thread.

I'm looking for recommendations for where to buy the actual grass or which brand to go for, it's very hard to tell what's better than what or which website to use. Looking for something at the higher end and ok with pets.

Thanks.

It's interesting that not a single person regrets having it fitted despite how much it's hated by others.
