Not the advice you want to hear, but the best hoover weve had was also by far our cheapest, we just got a Henry , (or the pet version: Harry)

It sucks like a hooker on speed and is really simple and cheap, its the only one we haven't managed to break

I resent spending money on cleaning tools!

Thanks for the replies, who'd have thought vacuums would be such a hot topic.

The Shark is looking good, I like that you can get 2 batteries with them (extra £100 granted) but if I developed a vacuuming fetish I could go for a good 40 min or so before needing to charge the thing. I might swing by Costco, I'm sure they had some in last time I was there.

Thanks again biggrin
I ended up as a Shark fan (having never heard of them) because when I needed a new vacuum cleaner I went to several stores and looked at all the usual brands. Then I went to Hughes; they put a piece of carpet on the floor, and threw some soil on it, and you could have a go at vacuuming it up with all the products. The Shark won so clearly I wouldn't be surprised if it was set up by their local rep!

I bought a Shark "liftaway" corded in Easter. I think it's great and I've not even bothered with my cordless Dyson V6 since.

I’ve been through 3 Henry’s in 4 years. They all get asthma after a while. I use them on site though

I’ve gone through two of them, not overly impressed. They are nowhere near as handy as a cordless.

This is the answer for more hardcore usage

We've got the one down from this but i wish I'd spent £10 more and got the one of the sled not with clip on wheels which fall off when you drift it round a corner and it smashes into a door frame...

If you have compressed air, you can blow out the filter then they'll be as good as new. The filter is a great big dinner-plate sized thing so with them it's possible.

Neato Robovac, do it!
Bloomin' marvellous little thing, save so much time and hassle. How successful it will be really does depend upon how cluttered the house is.

I only go round manually once a month to get the bits the robot doesn't get but still worth every penny.
