I have a years worth of runs in Strava I want to load into Garmin Connect I have an export of .gpx files from Strava but they dont seem to import using the import function in Garmin connect. Anyone done it, able to give me a step by step please?
So, you have the .gpx files on your computer, say on the desktop? You should just go to the "upload or import activity" button and follow the instructions:When you click on "browse", are you not getting a window pop up to find the files?
Just use the Tapiriik site
It allows you to move (or automatically sync) between a wide number of sports tracking sites.
In your case, you can set it to use Strava as the source and Garmin Connect as the destination. It will then transfer all of your activity details (make sure you don't set it to sync back from Garmin to Strava though).
I've successfully aggregated activities from Garmin Connect, Strava and Endomondo using it - it's very easy. If you have a large number of activities it might take a little time.
ETA: it will also allow you to back everything up to DropBox if you wish.

Thanks all! I sussed out they were zipped files on my mac rather than the windows and imported all the extracted files to Garmin. All good until I opened Strava and saw the sync duplicate the sessions in strava so spent last night manually deleting / correcting the 100 file dataset.
Will Tapiriik do the same / is there a way of stopping sync for legacy files? I'd like to import 2018 so far runs to Garmin, upload new runs from the watch to Garmin and have it sync new runs to strava. Run Garmin and Strava in parallel
Thanks again
Ian

Yes. It won't sync existing activities, and seems to be pretty smart in identifying them. Not sure I'm being clear on the problem. I have all of this years runs on Strava and only the last 3 runs on Garmin which Strava has also imported. So far so good.
I can export from Strava the back catalogue and can import them to Garmin. That bit is OK and that gets everything on Garmin which is what I want.
Then the problem starts!
Strava then sees the back catalogue in Garmin, assumes they are new runs and merrily imports them; duplicating all but the three in Strava. Bit of a PITA!
I'd like to have Garmin for the detail it gives and Strava for the community; how can I stop Strava importing / duplicating?
My only idea is to export all from Strava, load Garmin, delete all from Strava and allow the sync to replace them. Bit drastic and I don't want to lose a year of data! Surely there is a better way?!

Break you link between Garmin and Strava. Import rides/runs into Garmin. Re link accounts. Pretty certain it will only sync when new rides/runs are added.I can export from Strava the back catalogue and can import them to Garmin.
