Probably already mentioned, but it's 'an Historic Building', not 'a Historic Building'.

Not convinced by that i'm afraid.
Seems like American English and laziness are winning again - so I'm officially on the decline! ;0)

I also lost the battle for controversy and controversy

I get that it's a living language, but it's how some of us were taught.

If I was Cockney saying 'an 'istoric building' then perhaps. I've always detested the use of 'an' with a word beginning with 'h'. Whether that's correct or not.

Ha, well I'm a cockney, and so was my teacher! Still both 'an' and 'a' in use as we speak, so I can put 'pedant' away ;0)

Still nice to see some, even our friends cross the pond, are still using it the old way:

Why would I look like an idiot?

The construction joints were recommended by the contractors and the L.A's. Building Control - NOT ME rolleyes
Because it was you who was using it as an example on a public forum of how 'useless' Conservation Officers are.

You gave us two examples; one where you said that 'compromises were reached' (good... that sounds fair enough to me?) and another where, by the best account you've been able to give us so far, the Conservation Officer was right, and BC and the contractor were wrong.

Which doesn't sound 'overwhelmingly and consistently NEGATIVE (your caps) from where I'm standing?
yes

Hello all,

Submitted my dissertation about 20 minutes ago! Thank you for all your help and contributions, I believe I've thanked all who emailed individually, if not I'm sorry an I will correct that tomorrow morning.
In the mean time I've just ordered a celebratory chinese and as a symbolic thanks, I've bought a Pistonhead beer that I found in the shop.

CHEERS!
