The OP is asking about moving to a county town of around 100,000 people, not the middle of nowhere in Wales or Scotland where the only thing to talk to is a sheep.
Maybe but if you are used to London type of facilities and shops you really are talking a vast difference. That said I would rather live in Shrewsbury than anywhere within 20 miles of the M25.
Indeed. There is always something to do in London, with many different places to visit. Whilst I appreciate Shrewsbury is a large town, it doesn't compare to London. And Shrewsbury is set in a rural location.

I too would choose Shrewsbury over London. But the lifestyle in Shrewsbury is completely different to London.

I've lived deep downtown in a number of Capital Cities and I've lived in the sticks.

Best bit about the sticks is you can visit the cities for a bit, but always come home to the glorious countryside. Doesn't work the other way around for me.

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prop... Oswestry is quite nice as I remember

https://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prop... But in town, for that budget its quite limited, but should be quite nice and some schools near by

Shrewsbury has certainly gentrified since i lived there smile

London is ok if you are super poor or super rich. But after a bit the whole crime and rather nasty "elements" of big cities just get tiring .Also I am a bit of a "mountain /outdoor type ". London is Ok, But its not the place for me to want to bring up a 9 year old

It’s pronounced as in “Oh!” actually. Or as in sewing with cotton and thread. A historic spelling was Scrobesbury but somehow the spelling changed to Shrewsbury and incomers decided that the town owed its name to a small rodent smile

I live 7 miles out in Nesscliffe where Nesscliffe Hill has thousands of fir trees planted by the Earl of Bradford, medieval sandstone quarries and an ancient hill fort. Though we’re shortly going to move back to the outskirts of town.

It’s a great area to live but don’t tell any more people please.

Did you know that no other county in the UK features so many geological periods (10 out of 12) as Shropshire. And perhaps no other place in the world within such a small area. Hence it’s diverse and interesting terrain.

No its bloody well not smile

Another interesting fact

The quarry at Bayston hill provided the material for the track surface at Abu Dhabi and Barhain.

Would not know how to Hunt a house. Guess its easy as they dont move quick :-) Just going to get a basic idea . Plan to buy once the whole "brexit " thing has been placed on the table . Also might want to spend some time over 6 months doing the place up . .

I grew up in Oswestry. Lovely place. But transport links are ... well it's the car. Your OH if she's working odd hours will need to drive/cadge lifts of other nurses/live in Gobowen. (Where the train station and hospital are (no it's not a main line train)).

I can't think of anywhere I've been where I'd sooner grow up though. Some posh wkers, some poor wkers, but mostly good people in the middle. As a kid you all have to go to the one school and rub along together. (Unless they go private...but that was also a good place to plunder for female talent in late teens...). I think that's a great leveller.

If you want transport links to London with your consulting job, then Shrewsbury is a better bet. There is the odd direct train each day.
Better access to shops as well.
Same access to the "outdoors" really. Wales, Shropshire hills, etc. Get a train into Birmingham if you must hit a big city.
With a non-driver in the house, I'd think Shrewsbury is just a better option for you.

Enjoy the trip though! And the roundabout drag races around Shrewsbury. evil

OH worked in Oswestry for about 18months.............We love that part of the world and our next (and final) housemove will almost certainly be within about a 20 mile radius.

If you're in Shrewsbury at lunch time, The Armoury down the by river is good for food and then a little wander through the Quarry (park).

The Armoury is milftastic.

For a real pint the OP should try the Admiral Benbow, the Three Fishes and the Coach and Horses and definitely the Nags on Wyle Cop.

The Salopian is good if you like the smell of Jeyes fluid.

Agree about the Alb as well, cracking pub.

Agreed about The Alb, not lived that way for a few years but it was the place to go.

OP I live near Crewe (again a bit of a hovel), but we're in Nantwich which is lovely. Almost a smaller Shrewsbury, and Crewe has a large hospital also. Just a thought.

You lot live for Pubs ! . What would be handy is to know a nice place for a good breakfast and real coffee and somewhere for a reasonable Evening meal .

we are not really "pub" people .But thats not to say we would miss out on a great pub ! . Staying outside of town due to Hotel costs and availability
.managed to get a travel lodge for the 3 of us, 2 night : £58 all in !!

Peaberry - best coffee in Shrews.

Superb lattes. Somehow just richer and creamier than we've had anywhere else.
