Just got my £30 Tesco voucher by email as I joined via the DDS and uSwitch. Took a month but it got here in the end.

Also, thanks to Adrian (who I don't know) who joined via my link, another £50 banked. 👍

Are we allowed to share our referral codes these days? wink

Anyway... Bulb sent me an email yesterday inviting me to register to have a smart meter fitted... apparently engineers are in my area in the next few weeks, and they thought I wouldn't want to miss out (OK ...)

In the past I've read all sorts of articles telling me why not to have a smart meter installed... but what's the current opinion on them?

These are the second generation ones apparently (which still work if you switch energy providers). However, reading through the blurb, the only potential benefit I could see (to me personally) is that Bulb plan to allow you to make use of cheaper electricity off-peak. But at the same time, its only at the trial stage, and not available on the meters they're currently fitting.

That aside, is there any real world benefit to having one installed? (if not, I'll forgo the hassle I think)

You'll get all sorts of arguments about how having one will instantly put all you bank details & passwords online but I've gone from anti to meh about them. Bulb do say that 80% of users on the Smart Tariff trial saved money so if you knew when the peak time was (4-7pm I think) you can make sure you only use candles during that time.

What would be useful is live updating of usage on the home display but I don't think that's working yet which is why I didn't bother when they sent me the email.

Here's the Smart tariff. I can't see me saving anything at all by signing up to it.

Yes - I could imagine running the washing machine, tumble drier or dishwasher either off-peak or overnight to get the cheaper rate. But the peak time hours (4pm to 7pm) is when we would typically be using our (electric) hob and/or oven to cook dinner - so I guess it just averages out.

I think we'll give the opportunity a miss on this occasion. I'm already quite careful to switch off (or unplug) things that aren't being used, and not running the central heating unless its cold - I don't need a smart meter to help with that smile

I’ve been anti Smart from the off but I’ve booked an install for this reason.....

Recently did a kitchen extension whereby I had to do a sneaky move of the meter and consumer unit but unfortunately the cables from the meter to consumer unit are too short to put the meter up alongside the CU where it would be a lot neater to box in.

I’m hoping they will fit longer cables for me (I can’t touch the connections in the meter) or get my spark to fit longer tails in readiness.

If they won’t agree to that then they’ll be shown the door and they’re tea and biscuits will be taken off them :he:

Living in the North of Scotland area, those prices are horrendous. Think I'll stay on their normal tarrif.

Also now in the Bulb club. unfortunately - I didn't see this thread before otherwise would have used a referral code. hey ho!

Looking forward to my rebate from EON as they always over charge.

Am I right in thinking I can change my payment amounts? I could then drop them in summer when we use significantly less and raise them in winter - sounds so obvious!

oh - obligatory referral code.....thanks

I do like the app for uploading meter readings - takes seconds.

Scottish power used to take about ten bloody minutes,

Yes you can although they may suggest a figure to keep your balance positive. They didn't insist on it though.

I'm seeing lots of positives with bulb on here, I'm due end of contract with BG beginning of July.

I'm currently paying £228 a month combined (I raised to clear a shock debit due) and have taken to inputting my own readings months to save the aforementioned debit again.
Last month we used £88 combined !

I've seen on the bulb Facebook page 🙄 alot of complaints from people saying it was low but then price hikes, are these just people that get suckered in or in general what to expect
