I've had enough of domestic vacuum cleaners. I've tried everything from Dyson downward. I'm bored of mediocre suction.
A minor (but important) correction, you mean "Dyson upwards". Never has there been a worse designed, more fiddly to use, over-hyped appliance than a Dyson vacuum cleaner, it sits resolutely at the bottom of the pile.

Doesn't matter which brand, it's an EU directive that limits the power!
It's worse than that - it's an EU directive that was lobbied for heavily by ze Germans purely to put the UK (Dyson) at a disadvantage.... We should be up in arms and looking to have some sort of vote against this kind of thing..... I'm sure we could get someone at Dyson on board smile
Dyson put themselves at a disadvantage by being so bloody overpriced, poorly built and fragile.

Miele, really, are the only brand that make a vaccuum cleaner that will suck the carpet up from the floor.

That’s what I was gonna say biggrin

Miele Cat & Dog for us. You literally can’t move it on full power because it sucks itself to the floor!

Just for reference:

It’s a regulation not a directive.
You have conflated two stories, one being about maximum motor power and the other was Dyson’s concern regarding the way that energy efficiency (well suction) was measured (it was measured with an empty bag).
Dyson won the case.
You missed the obvious conflated 3rd story.

I have a VAX upright with powered bar, another carpet lifter.

It's a terrible home vacuum, though, the tools are pretty useless and the whole thing isn't in the least ergonomic. I have one - it's the 'bin' vacuum for all the nasty work.

scratchchin not so sure about a roller brush for pet hair.
I guess this might be one of those situations where the numerous variables can combine to create wildly different outcomes. We've got a cat, and so I guess its hair is shorter and thinner than from a dog, and the rather crude Vax roller attachment works extremely well and does so on all the vacuums we've got (Vax, Henry and an old Dyson) despite the variable suction between them.

Something else I find works well is an old 1/2" hacksaw blade - if this is scraped along the carpet (with the pile) it gathers up all hair into sausages like you say which are then trivial to suck up with anything. Seems to work particularly well in my wife's dressing room as her long hair isn't quite as easy to vacuum as the cat's.

Get a kirby and have it for life.
My mum had one, lasted for a good 20 years. The heaviest ugliest noisiest machine you ever laid eyes on but by god it did the job.

I have one too. It's great for clearing up the mess from DIY, but hopeless for carpets.

On the positive side it can suck a golf ball through a hose pipe. Much like my ex.

See if you can find an 1800W one of these: Miele Upright Cat And Dog Vacuum Cleaner
Had ours for ages & still works very well. Heavy to lift up but nimble enough pushing it around. Build quality is excellent & should last for several more years.
+1

Fantastic quality and a great hoover.

True, we used the old hoovers head, was nothing wrong with that
