A tale of lots of work for not much reward. I thought I’d make myself a little nick nack store for the hallway using some old pitch pine I’ve had at my yard for the last thirty years or so, that came out of an old church we did some work on. The church was built in the 1880s I believe so the timber will be pretty old.
Let’s re-saw!

Planed up quite nicely.

Dove tail time.

Drawer front time, let’s use this piece of wood, yay!

...with the knot in it, bugger! I was hoping to get all four drawer fronts out of one piece of timber
so all the grain carried across, oh well.

Grooves for the drawer bottoms.

Measure twice, cut once apparently...

Eye of Horus.

Clamps just about big enough...

All assembled, was feeling pretty happy at this point, happy with the tolerances on the
drawer shut lines, Rob Cosman won’t be losing any sleep but I’m getting there. The dovetails
weren’t the best I’ve done... however the pitch pine seemed extremely weak along the
grain, fissile is the term I think. I got the feeling doing the trial fit that if I knocked them
home too tight, knocking them back out may have snapped off the tails, so fitting them
was a one shot deal.

Time for shou sugi ban, the ancient Japanese art of fking up a fortnights workfrown

Not very happy, the pitch pine may not have been the best choice in hindsight, the resin
pockets not accepting the dye evenly, so some rubbed off when I applied the wax.

So, not quite turned out how I wanted but never mind, enjoyed the wood working bit and
I’m quite chuffed with design of the drawer pulls, so the actual drawer fronts are clean,
if you see what I mean. All hand tools used apart from the cutting of the curve on the sides where Mr.
Jigsaw was used!

I may have another go at making one but using oak to match the rest of stuff in the hallway,
taking the vagaries of the pitch pine out of the equation, we’ll see!

I love the colour on it too! I. Made a little pot holder a while back using the same technique/timber as a trial and thought the finish was awesome, the shou sugi ban really made it, the green dye on its looked pretty meh. Regular pine may have been the way to go instead of the pitch variety, though.

I'm in the process of doing various house DIY tasks, some of which has resulted in old floorboards (from a 1930's build) being removed. When cut, they have a very strong - quite pleasant - smell - hard for me to describe, but definitely not pine (toilet freshener???) in smell. Would they be pitch pine and how would you describe that smell? They also break along the grain reasonably easy.

Could be Cedar of Lebanon which has a very distinctive, perfumed smell.

Not usual to find Cedar of Lebanon floorboards, traditionally it's used to line chests and drawers as the smell repels moths, but not impossible I suppose.

Could well be pitch pine, it was (is) used for flooring. Have a look here Wood data base, at the various pines. If you can plane up the end grain cleanly and compare it to the pictures there, it might put you on the right track.

ETA There is a close up of the end grain of my timber here, further down, if you want to compare it to yours. Anomaly in growth rings
Re. the smell, it was pleasant but not particularly ‘disinfectanty’, apart from when I hit it with the blowtorch! I love the smell of shou sugi ban in the morning, smells like.........................................victory.

What to do with a chunk of oak?

I've got this chunk of oak (the small one under the beam) as a freebie with the beam.

Any suggestions of what I can do with it?

It's around 20" x 9" x 5" With the usual knots and splits etc

Possibly a pair of faux corbels to go under the fireplace beam?

Oooh, that is good, I've never seen anything like that before !

As suggested on UK Workshop, it must be the result of a trauma... but whatever, it made my day. smile

Also, I found I haven't posted on UK Workshop since 2014. smile

Agreed, you should take this opportunity to try a bit of wood shaping....

I feel like I would totally wreck a chunk of wood if I tried that biggrin

I've just ordered this: https://www.fyneboatkits.co.uk/kits/canoes/canadia...

Wish me luck!

Pilot project, before potentially doing a far more complex and interesting cedar strip kayak. Woodworking experience in the last 20 years amounts to putting together furniture and building a rough gaming table for the garage out of studding...

Looking forward to updates on that smile I've had it in mind to make this one for a while: https://www.fyneboatkits.co.uk/kits/rowing/wherry/
Once my garage workshop is finished that will be one of the projects - will be good to get back into rowing in something way more stable than a single scull!

Oh I'm not sure I'm brave enough to do 'updates'...

hehe

Maybe a "it's arrived" pic, followed some months later by either a pile of scraps of ply for the chiminea or a finished canoe?

Sway, please do the odd update. It looks great. There are many superstars on this thread and then there are people like me that aren’t. But everyone will be backing you!

Good luck!

Oh, OK then...

The bit I'm really worried about is the inwales/outwales. Never done scarfing, and I know I have about a 20th of the clamps needed. Problem is, I really really don't want to buy some 40 odd clamps for a single project!

Anyone got any ideas to solve that? Wondering if there's places I might be able to rent a box full of clamps for a week!

Good work. Especially the one that has hints of cricket bat about it. Not that the England team seem to recall what to do with them…
