We've had a pure memory foam mattress now for 15 years and can't see us ever buying anything else. Both kids too and they have both slept very well on them. None of us find them too hot.

I think some issues might be psychological and people have preconceived ideas of what they will be like.

£2k on a mattress? omg.

we bought a Simba King size for around £750 think it was.

Excellent, very comfortable.
When we moved house it had a problem (the foam seperated from the other layer).
Simba sent us out a replacement without much hassle.

We have tempur pillows. I love bed biggrin

I was about to update the long running mattress thread.

Basically you need to test them !

I tried the Tempur in John Lewis and was shocked anyone bought one, it was hideous.

I have also tried several other beds using their "sleep / comfort guaranty" as it's become clear 10 mins in a showroom is not a good representation !

Otty - very firm - pretty much like sleeping on a board
Rem Fit - very firm, worse than an Otty (for me)
Latex Sense - firm too firm, medium ok for me but wife didn't like it
John Ryan - medium is softer than any of the above but still too firm

Obviously all IMO and I have told each seller that the previous mattress was too firm and they have insisted theirs is softer.

My Osteopath has said that many of her clients have found cheap mattresses better.

2 mattresses in our house. 1 double mattress, super cheap, we and any visitors have a great nights sleep - but I'm a bit tall for it. Other is a John Lewis £1,800 super king size - we struggle with that.

Next mattress will be a cheapie!

I had a Simba. At the time, I thought it was great and had it for a couple of years.

This year we got a king size bed, went to the mattress shop, tried out a Tempur then tried the Simba and I was amazed at the difference. The Simba felt like a sponge and the Tempur (which I think was the 3 or 4 rating firmness) was much, much nicer. I tried various spring/foam/gel ones too but none of them came close to the Tempur. It wasn't even the ultra expensive one and I think it was around £1600.

I doubt I will ever go back to non Tempur now.

Also got 2 of the pillows, I had firm and the wife had medium and they are pretty good too.

We went with the intention of buying Simba with the appropriate budget. Tried it, and then the Tempur and decided to spend double plus...

I do understand the "pay for what you get" but I couldn't stomach spending mega money on the mattress - profit margins on them are hilarious.
at least the "in a box" ones aren't quite so expensive and you get the free trial.

Circa 41p per night. You spend a third of your life in bed, a cheap mattress is a false economy IMO smile

Except in my Osteopath's experience, some of the cheap ones are better for your back !

we tried one out in the shop, it was weird and we felt seasick. The slow sinking in was very strange and trying to turn over was difficult. we ended up going for a very firm mattress that we definitely sleep on rather than in. the shop guy said you either love them or hate them.
Same. We tried dozens when we bought our new bed a couple of weeks ago. The Tempur felt utterly peculiar and I didn't like it at all - just moving around on it or trying to get off it was quite a strange sensation and required a surprising amount of effort.

We went for a firm pocket sprung one with a sort of built in feather-filled topper. It was quite dear but really comfortable.
I got the weird sinking feeling too. It did feel that once I was down I was stuck.

I can't imagine they are very good for anything other than sleeping.

Are you Donald Trump ? Getting half the story and letting your mouth runaway with you.

I haven't seen my Osteopath for many years, I had to go again since trying all these £800-£1000+ mattresses - I don't consider them cheap when they are 4x the price of the cheap ones !

I was happy for years on 4" of foam that cost £100, but when I tried to buy more they couldn't sell it to me as they were now under contract to Hypnos !

We've had one for nearly ten years, and won't be buying it's replacement from Tempur. Ours is very hot, although I understand the newer ones have gone some way to address this. With so many direct sales options (why are most of them named after girls?) and free trial periods, I'm tempted to shop around online first. My wife is leaning more towards a more traditional pocket-sprung option, possibly one that comes on two halves so we can pick individual firmness. The Vispring we had previously was great, so I can definitely see their options being in the running.

Can’t speak for their mattresses but I recently - through gritted teeth and crying all the way to the tills - spent £85 on a Tempur pillow and I’ve never slept better than I have since I got it.
Despite not loving my Tempur mattress any more, my Tempur Classic pillow is still great - I hate staying away from home and having to put up with inferior options.

I am a tight bugger and thinking about a new mattress but i don't want anything heavy as the bed is on a platform that raises up to a 45 degree angle to get it out of the way. (man cave/spare bed type thing.)

I went on to 'which' website and did a comparison and was really surprised to see that that the very expensive tempur scored very low in the satisfaction ratings and a £150 Ikea mattress was in the top 3! Still haven't been to try one out though.

Unjustifiably expensive, if you ask me. We tried a Tempurpedic (I'm not sure if that's the same brand or not - but it was in a similar price bracket) and found it very comfortable.

In the end we did some research and bought an lesser known brand from Amazon and have found it equally comfortable.

With foam mattresses especially, the margin is HUGE, so a lot of the bigger companies are primarily using that extra cost for fancy marketing.

Big industry here in the US and a bit of a minefield. This is an interesting article about it if you've got a spare few minutes: https://www.fastcompany.com/3065928/sleepopolis-ca...

These threads are usually tricky, because everybody just ends up suggesting everything.

I have two of these https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/mattresses/mat...

One firm and one medium (my old bed, now the guest bed)

They have both been great, the comfiest bed i've ever slept in. They also have a good return policy.
