Morning all - anyone ever have issues with robot hoovers & rugs?

We had a hardwood bungalow - perfect for a hoover, but not great for warm feet. Until we get it properly carpeted next year we bought several large 'faux Persian' rugs.

Height wise they look to be below the 2.3cm Neato Limitations, and certain look less then other 'carpet:wood thresholds' we have in doorways etc which he has managed with fine in the past, however he refuses to vacuum them. He will 'accidentally' go up onto them, drive around for a bit then come out again, same if we force him to start on the rug - he will vacuum it all...accidently drive off it, drive back on and ignore the rest of the house.

I have tried some duct tape around the edges to reduce the 'drop' but it makes no difference.

it is the fact he will happily 'stumble' up and down it fine that is especially frustrating!

Any tips? Thanks

Just pulled the trigger on the iRobot S9+ bundle mop deal. My sons have been winding Mrs Rxe (who is currently severely incapacitated with bits of metal sticking out of her foot) up that I have ordered a duo of hot Ukrainian hookers to come and clean the house on Wednesday. Mrs rxe is worried. The robots will be called Natalyia and Olga.

They will be severely tested by the filth generated by 2 German Shepherds. I will report back.

The Eufy 30C Max was delivered today. It picks up well, but looks like it's pissed in it's random approach! Does it learn and get a bit more efficient?
No I don’t think it will, it’s just pseudo-random. When it bumps or detects objects it turns and trundles off in another direction. And repeat!

Initial impressions are good. Olga (the mop) has been renamed Svetlana. Mrs rxe has a friend called Olga.

We’ve done one run of sweeping and mopping, and the result is as good as the human powered version. Not quite as good as a human with a stream cleaner, but perfectly good enough. The only difference between the robots and the steam cleaner is that the steam gets the grout lines cleaner. The robots are not “shock and awe” like a powerful steam cleaner - it’s the fact that they hammer away at it for several hours, doing a really thorough job.

The floor was last cleaned 48 hours ago, and it has had the full German Shepherd treatment in that time. Muddy paws, fine mud from the coat. The robots sorted it. Even Mrs rxe is impressed.

Natalya (the hoover) is about as loud as a small vacuum cleaner - not offensive, but we will need to try night time cleaning, I suspect we might hear it. More importantly, the dogs WILL hear it, and it will take time for them to work out that it is not burglars. Svetlana is silent, you can hear a whirring in the room, but nothing from (say) the next door room.

Just pulled the trigger on the Ecovacs Deebot N79S. Got it for £144 after discount and vouchers - yeah it doesn't have any smart navigation but for that price I can live with random cleaning.

Death to cat fur!

I've stripped our one down 4 times now, to the bare bones. Cleaned every plastic part with either a baby wipe, in the sink with some soap and water and dried or some furniture polish. Last time I also opened up the gearboxes for the wheels etc and added some fresh lithium grease to help keep things moving smoothly. Cleaned out all the ducts which were full of residual ash from the wood burner. Had to do a couple of mods to the front bumper microswitch holders as they kept getting stuck. Rebuilt and all working away well again. Do it every few months as it gets full of crap despite having seals and filters to stop this. Definitely a bit quieter and also doesn't beep half as much as the microswitches on it don't get stuck. Takes maybe 45 mins to an hour from start to finish and all you need is some Philips screwdrivers.

Any current updates on recommendations?
The Eufy G30 is currently on offer for £250 unless anyone can see it cheaper or has discount codes?
I prefer the idea of mapping rather than bumping around cleaning!

I have the G30 since the start of the year and has worked really well. Got it for a similar price and really good to do things overnight. I'll PM you with some details that may help discount it.

You don't need one..... you need one per floor.
I've actually stopped bothering to move mine upstairs now, partly because who can be bothered with that, but mainly because dirt comes in the back door and slow migrates around the house as people move around. As the hoover runs every day there's not enough time for much dirt to get carried upstairs before it's slurped up.

So it's actually doing a pretty good job of keeping upstairs clean anyway. I moved the portable Dyson thing that's falling apart, because that's just what they do, upstairs, so that gets a quick going over every week or two.

After 4 years of being 'stuck' in some crypto currency, I managed to break even a couple of weeks ago and cashed out my £3k......so I decided to take the plunge, and have ordered the top of the range hoover and mop combo: https://shop.irobot.co.uk/irobot-roomba-s9-braava-...

I fully expect to be judged for going for the most expensive option, but as it was basically money I had thought I'd lost, I thought why not.
The robots are due for delivery today. Our entire ground floor is laminate, so I'm pretty confident that this combo of hoover and mop should be very effective at keeping it looking awesome.

I shall report back once I've set it all up and they've got to work.

Just seen that you bought the same bundle I have arriving today, so good to read the above.
I guess I'll find out, but from what you've said, I don't think I'll be able to set the hoover off overnight as noise travels far too easily around this place. I work from home these days, so I'm here most of the time, so I guess I'll just have to put up with an hour or so of hoover noise at some point in the day. Maybe I put it on at 7am and it'll force me out of bed!

I'll report back once I have tested them out a bit. We've just renovated our house, so I expect there will still be a lot of dust settling over the next week or so, so I'm very pleased to have the robots arriving today to help clear that up.

This is exactly what we have, and it has worked well, with some wrinkles on the path.

The hoover (Natalya) worked well out of the box. Our problem is German Shepherd hair drifting around solid floors, and it absolutely deals with that. The house is cleaner than it every has been. We have a step half way though the ground floor, but simply hoovering the kitchen every night makes the world of difference.

Natalya then went mad. Refused to start, then decided to stop halfway through jobs, generally a pain in the arse. IRobot were good - did remote diagnosis (it was buggered, Error 31), and sent us a new one. Took them a long time because Brexit/lockdown, but it arrived a few months ago and is working perfectly.

Svetlana (the mop) does a good job, but is showing signs of madness, and may need to be replaced. If you stick her on the floor, she gets on with mopping just fine. She seems to have trouble getting out of her dock. I need to investigate properly.

Words of warning - bottle caps and coins left on the floor knacker the hoover rollers. It does take a slightly different mindset with these - rather than hoovering, you need to spend a bit of time picking up anything that they will attempt to swallow, but won’t actually get eaten. They eat socks, and then text you. The dogs are fine with them - they get nudged out of the way, and neither of the robots have been chewed.

Great thank you for the tips! Cat hair is probably our main reason for getting them, so it sounds like we'll be in good hands.

Makes sense to have a quick clear up of things like coins etc, but thankfully we (well, the Mrs really) is very tidy, so stray objects should be kept to a minimum.

Is it simple to get started? Do you need to help manually map the house or do they take care of that themselves?

They've arrived and already been put to work!
First impressions are that the hoover is not quiet, so we definitely won't be putting it to work over night. Other than that, so far it seems rather clever and is doing a good job! Probably managed half the house before sending itself home - that's just off the charge out of the box, so once fully charged I'm sure it'll be fine.

I'm assuming the mop will wait until the hoover has gone back to finish the job before heading out? Or do I need to set that up?

Yes, very simple, plug in, charge, connect to Wifi, press clean. The hoover is a a bit picky about where its dock is - it didn’t like our first option, and refused to go home again. Might have been the first sign of madness, I will have to check with the new one.
