Sorry, I think you typed something in error. You posted that three gates were costing you £25k’

I’m presuming you aren’t installing a portcullis and drawbridge?
Inflated quotes are very common if you own an expensive property. I've had heated arguments with trade acquaintances who believe it to be quite acceptable and something of a bonus opportunity. Quite different from 'don't want the work' quotes.

Simple......get 2 of these.

Secure them to the vertical gate post (assuming its thick/substantial enough). If you do it right as in recess it in a bit it will look quite professional. Then lay what we called "Don 10" which is actually 2 strand wire from phone to 2nd set in house. Its runs on AA batteries and lasts months. Person picks up phone and turns dial to ring. Phone rings in house, answer, open door.....job done.

D10 wire. We used to reel out 100's meters.

Get a ring doorbell as per the first post and get an access point ran up most of the way with cat 6 cable, be about £500 max including the doorbell and AP.

I have Ring kit all over my property and on the gates. They are fine in the weather, mine is over a year old now and has been on the door for that period.

Sorry for being slow to reply, we've been away - Thank you all very much for your advice and comments. It is very difficult dealing with tradesmen when you live in a larger house, I'm pretty sure these automated gates people have a standard way of calculating costs, this is as follows:

Take length of drive, multiply by size of house equals........ Hey presto, there's your price!

I think we're going to go with the option that several have suggested, a pay as you go sim and sign on gate.

Many thanks again
