Quick question, how much sand will I need to re-joint around 150sqM of patio with gaps around 20mm.

Generally working on the 6:1 ratio with Cement.

If I can I will get bulk bags delivered but don't want to go too overboard nor run out by miles.

Thanks.

Depends how big your slabs are and how deep your mortar will be.....

It’s somewhat basic maths - length x width x depth will tell you how many square meters you need.......

Yes good point. Slabs are around 40cm square about 2cm deep. Plan is to start tomorrow due to some sudden extra hands.

Ok - so as a quick approximation let’s call it 160m2 - and square - so 40m x 40m so @ 40cm slabs that’s 100x100 slabs

So you have 100 horizontal +100 vertical mortar lines (well 99 really but that makes the maths harder)

200 lines x 40m x 0.02m wide x 0.02m deep = 3.2m3

So I’d say somewhere just under 3 cubic metres of sand

But please check my maths as i’ve been on the whisky.......

Err, 40m x 40m = 1600m2 - so 10x too much!?!

If you're starting tomorrow then I take it you haven't raked it out yet? Just order 1/2 ton then take it from there.

Yes all cleaned out today, then patio slabs pressure washed and joints cleared. Local place normally does same day deliveries.

I make it half that

I recently done 38 slabs roughly same size and used less than 1 bag (don't know weight but Major bag from Wickes @ £1.80). I used a 5:1 mix, but my gaps were less than 20mm. 10/15mm

Local building merchants delivered 1tonne of sand at 1000 this morning! (Smallest order quantity but still cheap) One thing clear will not need a tonne but progress went well over 50% done.

Any one need any sand?

How are you applying it? In my younger days I brushed it in dry and then sprinkled it with water. Made a hell of a mess!

Yep doing exactly that. Doesn’t look too bad.

It won’t last! Especially if you use a jet washer to clean your slabs.

I’m using “easy joint” on my new patio probably this weekend. I used Silka brush in stuff on my neighbours last year which was pretty good but still had to compact it with a trowel then brush in more and “strike” it.

Easyjoint has to be kept continuously wet. The water helps take the compound right down.

Edit: this stuff.....

This. Not cheap, but worth it in labour saving alone !

I am intrigued with Silka setting sand how is your neighbors patio doing, any grass or weeds or issues ?

I read up on Easyjoint it does look good but one reviewer said its not good for stopping weeds/grass and moss build up, while Silka setting sand is meant to aid better in that but not sure it would stop mother nature.

I may give Silka sand and ammonium sulphamate sprayed on each year and a good stiff brush every now and then on my patios.
