My 2ps worth

-Avoid mattress in a box companies, from what I researched, read, heard on net always have issues down the road.

-John Ryan, Premier Inn, Sealy mattresses

I have read still many prefer over John ryan mattresses but even you do hear some returning it, getting a fault on it down a year or 2 or saying was not worth the high price tag but they are generally voted top of the top.

Family member recently got an sleepeeze pocket sprung (2000), looked the business but cost £350 from £500, lasted 2 nights and dipped in the middle and never went back up, so it got returned naturally.

I would advise to buy from companies that allow you to return the mattress like here:

https://www.mynextmattress.co.uk/sleep-trial

Many other out there, sure you have to sometimes pay a return fee (50-65 quid) but at least you have the option rather then none.

I personally have a Sealy mattress :

https://www.mattressman.co.uk/mattresses/sealy/781...

I risked it several years ago from here back then it was rrp £499 also but paid about £330, its medium firm id say, not changed since 1st day I used it so comfy for my bad back and great for back and side sleeping which I do, I think I got lucky though but if I do buy another one its going to be the same one if not similar and def sealy brand wise.
interesting that my next mattress has vispring will take a closer look thanks ( ps one is 14k would love to sleep on that!!! )

I had an Otty; far too hard. Switched to a Brook & Wilde Elite in soft and it's lovely. The site price is a bit punchy, but there are 40% off codes, and Amex did 15% cashback.

I've done the expensive British thing, the local specialist who needs your entire medical history and an IQ test thing, and two mattresses in a box. Boxes. Thus far the B&W is the winner by some margin.

I've got a Hypnos Orthos Elite Cashmere mattress, bought from www.mynextmattress.co.uk.

I've had it 8 years now and it's still excellent. 10 year guarantee with it also.

I also recommend checking out the Hypnos pillow selection. I've got a Hypnos deep latex pillow which came with a 5 Year Warranty. It never needs plumping and latex is totally different to memory foam, and doesn't make you hot. I bought it at the same time as the mattress and it's still going strong. My sister stayed with us for a month and raved so much about the pillow that I bought her one for Christmas and she was over the moon. Might seem pricey outlay for a pillow initially, but mine is fantastically comfortable and is the same shape as when I bought it. I haven't bought another pillow in 8 years.

That’s looks interesting. Do u have a bad back out of interest - is it too firm? Did u try it in a shop first?

I had posted on this thread a couple of years ago. Since bought the John Ryan Origins 1500 which we're happy with.

I did read visprings are pretty good also in a massive 65+ page thread on best mattresses, similar vain to the john ryan level of mattresses during my new mattress hunting.

Someone did sum it up in a single post believe its mentioned here:-

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/mattress...

That hypnos brand is mentioned I believe in that thread, looks lovely.

I do think though new mattresses are very hit and miss, some are spending 2K and its going faulty in weeks or 2 years (John Ryan) or other top brands, so not sure about quality control overall maybe its dropped from several years ago and covid not helped one bit naturally. So I would not take too much stock in say an 14K mattress or 2K mattress, mine cost £330 and sounds much better then those 1K ones tbh, so its an mattress lottery imo.

I do still recommend a company you can return the mattress, otherwise you have to lump it and stick with it if you have spent X amount.

I done my back in, right knee in few years back it was a 8-12 month recovery, but lucky my Sealy mattress is medium/firm so not too soft and not too hard but you want it a tad firm so perhaps a rating like 6-8 if any sites show it, my back was able to recover in the end but only thanks to that sealy mattress !

We had a Tempur for 8 years, finally started to dip so we got a new one. The new one is two years old and has gone all squidgy, it’s nothing like as good as the old one. The annoying thing is that it retains its shape so they won’t change it under the guarantee.

I won’t be buying or recommending one of these again.

I bought a Silentnight geltec 3000 last year and it's been superb.

Tried various hybrid/memory foam ones, just couldn't get on with them (some people seem to like them though)

I used to wake up with an aching hip, being a side sleeper.

Completely fine now.

We bought an Emma which was a joke not fit for purpose.

We’ve had a John Ryan origins 1500 for a fortnight now and no companies

We replaced an ageing Hypnos with an Emma, it was truly dreadful in every imaginable way. The returns process was also a joke, kept on booking returns only for them to be cancelled without notification.

We went with a loaf "perfect mattress" firm, about £800 in superking. Very pleased with it for the money.

I would not vote for John Ryan.

All the advice we received from them led us to two mattress options from them. We followed their advice and bought the firmness that they specified and a mattress that they recommended.

After we got it delivered, we were unsure as it felt too soft.
We spoke to JR, they advised us that it would be fine, just a case of getting used to it and it settling.

Guess what, 1 year in its way too soft.
It now has a "hill" in the middle of the bed.
We regularly rotate/flip the mattress

We've been advised by JR that a hill is normal!

Our last ViSprung mattress, after a decade of use, didn't have a hill.

We've been offered to pay for someone from JR to come and check if our JR mattress is defective. From the tone kf communication, I doubt any "defect" would be found. Particularly as JR think a hill is normal.

The fact is that we followed all of JR's advice and they were wrong in the mattress firmness that they specified. When we phoned JR after a few weeks, as we thought it was too soft, we should have returned it, rather than again taken their advice to allow it to settle.

In short, their advice was entirely wrong and we are left with a mattress that costs thousands and is giving me severe back pain.

I'm not surprised, apart from the fact you got a hill not a hollow...

Luckily Sleepmasters has met their fate now, but when I had subsidence and backache with one of their mattresses the 'expert' they sent in was clearly bent. What he said to me was totally different to his official report. Got a refund eventually, but only by pulling a flanker. Complete wkers.

I'm amazed that almost every advert on TV now seems to be for mattresses. Presume China is pumping them out for £1 each?

Been to look at mattress today. Was suppose to get one over a year ago but really don't want to spend the money keep convincing myself my current one is OK.

Few things to note

1. Some of the big bed shops are like second hand car sales. Telling me all the discounts I'm getting and trying to sell snake oil. Really got on my nerves.

2. I still can't decide between foam or springs!

3. I don't need a machine to tell me if I like a firm bed.

Anyway now I'm getting shed loads of adverts for beds and still lost what to buy / how much to spend.

I just bought a Visprung mattress from mynextmattress based on this thread. First night on it last night and it seems worth the outlay. Time will tell!

Actually, there was another thread as well that I used to research mattresses. Anyone got a link for it? Someone on there mentioned they had some excellent pillows that were extremely comfortable and lasted years. I want some too!

I found that quite useful when we bought a new mattress a while ago.

On topic, we just bought a SilentNight Eco Comfort Breath Pocket 1200 for our spare room. Seems to be a nice mattress.

I’ve got a simba that was about £600 for a king size after 40 percent off. Seems like ok value considering it’s at least comparable to the comfiest beds I’ve slept in. Haven’t had it all that long so can’t comment on long term use but it was the 200 night trail that convinced me on it as my last 2 mattress were great in the shop but bloody awful for me after a month or so.

Recommend me a mattress is going to produce the same nonsense as “ recommend me a car “ .
You’re just going to attract the usual dreamworld suspects claiming they own a £5 million mattress / car / watch . I’d suggest looking at a home improvement forum rather than a car related one ?

I did all the research etc bought a £1k pocket sprung Hypnos and it was hollowing out where we sleep within a year.

I was happy with my cheap foam one for 10 years
