Automating My Garage Door
Discussion
You can get gsm diallers
Basically you pop a pay as you go SIM card in it and call it and it opens
Seems future proof to me. I do wonder whether you can restrict the calling numbers, otherwise a cold call or miss dial might open the door and leave it open
Whatever you do is want some sort of notification when it opens.
My parents (me) used somfy garage openers, very simple but work

Chamberlain do an app for theirs - you can open & close from that as well as see current state - seems a bit more secure than others. It's a box that connects to your router & has some level of secure connection.
I also put web connected CCTV cameras in mine, so I could always double check.
Great for deliveries - I could talk to the driver, open the door, then direct them where to leave it, watch them do it & leave, then close the door behind them
OP - also make sure you can drill into the concrete lintel you have as it looks quite tall. If not then you may need some wood secured somewhere higher that hangs down so your front bracket can mount to that.

I get the impression I may be better off getting someone else to fit for me. I'll probably end up spending an afternoon trying to do it then paying someone to bail me out.
DIY Cluedo!Moods. In the garage. With a spring.
As a 5, maybe the approach is to simultaneously look at how you’d do it yourself (I’ve fitted one in the past and it was a total doddle, mostly because the wooden beams were exposed so fitting the box and screw runner was easy), while getting a couple of quotes to see what the fair price is.

Sorry I didn't want something that looks like
a hemorrhoid hanging off my garage ceiling suspended by meccano just to open the door.
But you like the look of a crappy box above the door hiding everything behind horrible plastic cladding and corner strips?a hemorrhoid hanging off my garage ceiling suspended by meccano just to open the door.
Up and over all day long in a garage.
Unless you have a factory then roller shutters.

Do they go anywhere or is collecting doors just a hobby? Busterbulldog said:

You've lost a bit of length by having to mount the roller door inside the aperture, and from outside they look like a human being without a belly button. But you seem happy. Is there a lot of crime in your area?a hemorrhoid hanging off my garage ceiling suspended by meccano just to open the door.

+1 What the hell is going on there? Did you build a garage in the middle of a plot and then build a house around it or something Jobbo said:

It just hides the roller, makes it a little quieter and comes apart for easy maintenance should any be required. If you prefer an up an over door that's your prerogative I have no issue with your choice.Up and over all day long in a garage.

I was wondering if the crossbar at the end of the tracks would get in the way as the opener pulls the door open. Although mine is a sectional door so goes back a long way. Did mine myself year ago - B&Q used to sell Clopay (it's pretty well the standard door used in the US) insulated doors. I think I got the opener from Screwfix. Took a weekend to take the old door out, build (the sections had to be attached to each other) and fit the new one, and install the opener.
The vast majority of the time was on the door, the opener was very easy - it's not doing much, the spring assisted door opens and closes with the lightest of touches.

Electric opener has been ordered. Fingers crossed I can work it out.
Does anyone know the name for the metal lengths (available at most DIY stores?) I will require to make the bracket to suspend the motor from the ceiling?
Best stuff would be metal angle. You will need bolts too. Does anyone know the name for the metal lengths (available at most DIY stores?) I will require to make the bracket to suspend the motor from the ceiling?
