Thank you all again. I think I do need to set a parameter, so I think max 35 minutes on the train is probably a sensible thing.

We're going to rent first, so we may well change this going forward when we finally buy.

So, the million dollar question is where you guys think a good introduction to Surrey life is?

It’s been a while since I lived in Surrey, but has anyone mentioned Leatherhead?

Google says it’s 40 minutes to Waterloo on the train, it’s convenient for the M25, and on the edge of the North Downs.

Cobham is the best for me by some way out of all places mentioned And I don’t live there myself. Self contained with amenities but laid back.

Go down with the fam on a Sat, early lunch at The Plough (need to book), walk into Cobham past Tilt common have a quick nosey round there, walk past the weir, pint in the Old Bear, wander up the high street for a cake at Brontes cafe, have a browse in the wine shop & Farrants. Spot a few supercars. Worse ways to spend an afternoon. I used to live in Primrose Hill and I like Cobham.

Epsom, Esher, Banstead, Worcester Park, Lightwater, Chipstead, Dorking, Surbiton...the list is endless.

You need to decide how to prioritise your criteria. Is it as close to London as possible? Why does it have to be surrey if you're working in London?

You admit to not being familiar to surrey so why restrict your location? Bromley is nice and is only 20 minutes to Victoria. But it's not in surrey. Sevenoaks is also nice and again, not in surrey!

A friend moved to Woking a while ago, mentioned it to my Dad saying 'she's moved to a nice road in Woking'.

His reply 'so she lives on White Rose Lane'

Me: 'how did you know?'

Dad: 'There's only 1 nice road in Woking'

Bracknell is an hour to Waterloo vs 40 minutes from Walton. It's hardly Wales tongue out

Anyway, I didn't specifically suggest moving to Bracknell, I just noted that we did. Please read what I wrote.

And whilst it has its good and bad areas, that's true of most towns. Pretty much everything about Bracknell's infrastructure and facilities is far superior to those under Elmbridge council. I'd expect those in nicer areas such as Sunningdale, Ascot, Windsor, etc to be even better.
I did the opposite to you. Bracknell to Walton. Firstly, the fast train is 26 mins. And the 1 hour from Bracknell? It’s aspired to, rarely achieved.

I know live within walking distance of WOT station and love it.

I’ve lived in Weybridge (and Walton) for 40+ years, since I was born in fact! You can tell how popular Walton station is with commuters by the number of people that get off there. It’s a lot busier than Weybridge even though the latter is only a few mins on. The parking around Walton is much larger albeit expensive.

I’ve always walked the the station personally, at times that was 25+ mins but now it’s only about 5 minutes. Not that I need to walk there at the moment!

Is it still possible to drive into Burwood Park these days or have they restricted access like St George's Park? I wouldn't mind taking the kids for a drive to show them where I lived many years ago.

All but one of the gates have barriers. The main entrance has a guard building now but no barrier as such. Burhill Estates just handed over management to the residents and there has definitely been some investment in tidying things up.

I suppose they had to do something to prevent me from returning.

The guard on the main gate is only really there to control commercial traffic.

You probably wouldn't recognise it if you haven't been there for a fair few years. Wall to wall McMansions now. I only really walk around there once or twice a year and every time I'm amazed by yet another huge redevelopment. We were the biggest poshest house in the road when we moved in 20 yrs ago. Now we're the smallest scruffiest.

If you can hang on until this Covid crap is over, take week or so holiday in one of those places, walk, walk, and walk to get the feel for them, preferably when peeing of rain.

The last time I visited was when they knocked down the old mansion where the deaf school was and built those lovely new mansions. I think that visit was about 15 years ago.

The whole area is another world. At least £500,000 for a grotty 3 bed semi the last time I checked!

There is still a mix of properties but fewer and fewer of the 'old' ones. Just as there are still Tarrant houses in St George's Hill although most are sold on the basis of a plot for redevelopment. We almost bought in Burwood Park a year ago but ended up outside.

Double that these days.
