Interesting planning law change that passed yesterday for anyone considering doing similar to a chalet or bungalow

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-laws-to-ext...

Homeowners will also be able to add up to 2 additional storeys to their home to create new homes or more living space for growing families through a fast track approval process, with a requirement to carefully consider the impact on neighbours and the appearance of the extension.

Finally got around to fitting these wonderful coat hooks ( I know I’m sad)

We bought these about a year ago from a local cabinet maker who makes one off pieces in his spare time. I absolutely love the simplicity of the design, yet the craftsmanship that has gone into to ensure each of the teeth are tensioned so you can move them all individually.

Yes I could have bought some MDF stuff from B&Q a lot lot cheaper, but these are just great. One day we might even get around to painting the wall they are fitted too!

At long last - the building works are finally complete!

The bi-fold doors have been installed today, and the floating corner is a masterpiece. Originally the architects idea, we have stuck with it, even though it would have been cheaper to add a column. The doors are extra tall too, approx 2.4m high so it makes the room feel really big.
Of course its not all plain sailing, they manufacturer forgot to include the internal blinds, so they are on order and the glazing panels will be replaced at a later date.

We also had the glass panel fitted for the juliet balcony. We wanted plain glass so as not to obscure the view. we are very happy with how that has come out

So all thats left now is a whole load of decorating, starting this weekend with tiling the kitchen floor - all 49sqm of it frown

To finish off the thread - some before and after photos of the project.

Its amazing to think we haven't extended the footprint of the original house and only increased the overall height of the house by approx 1.5m, yet it has made such a difference.

Its taken the best part of 8 months in total, more or less on the budget we agreed with the builder and we are very happy with the final finish. This will be our forever home now.

Thanks for following

They would take up too much room if they opened into the room. The photos don’t really do the space justice, there is more than enough when they are open. We may have been able to get the doors to fold back to the walls, but that was out of budget in the end, the pennies only stretched so far!

Really nice transformation, that’s a proper house to be proud of. Well done.

I've really enjoyed this thread and congratulations on the end result. Although we're now in the process of buying something that doesn't need for such drastic surgery to fit our needs, this thread was one of the reasons we started to look seriously at moving having toyed with the idea for about 4 years, and also made me look outside the box at houses or even bungalows I previously would have dismissed.

Thanks everyone - i would say its been tough, but we had a good builder and other than paying for it and making a few decisions on where things go, we really haven't had to do loads to get our hands dirty. I have always wanted to do a self build, but i think this project shows i'm not at that level of commitment or skill level yet.

Looks great! However, the bifolds just don’t work for me. You’ve got less of a useable opening than just having the set of three open on their own?

I like the idea of an open corner, but when it’s an internal corner (as opposed to an external corner) I’m not sure there’s much point unless you have a huge set of doors?

I guess it gives you options and you can open either set on their own, which is probably better than both at the same time.

Just my humble opinion!

What a great transformation. What was the total cost if you don't mind my asking and also the square footage increase? Did you ever consider knocking down and starting from scratch?!

We are around £160k total cost, not sure what the sq ft increase was, but upstairs we went from 3 beds and a bathroom to 5 beds, bathroom and 2 ensuites

Knocking down wasn't an option as we had to live in it during the build smile

Thanks to a local Facebook group, I was able to find a lady who used to live in our house in the late 70’s. Turns out her dad did the first extensions to the original bungalow that was built in 1952

She was able to track down some photos of the original bungalow, I think it’s great to see how the property has developed over the years.

Even better, turns out she was also friends with Liz Hurley who used to stay at the house - surely that has to be worth a blue plague!! smile

The front of the bungalow with a nice Triumph 2000 Circa 1978

The house when we purchased it a couple of years ago

And how it is today,

The rear of the bungalow as they were starting on the extension around 1979

As we purchased it - the upper room appears to have been extended at some point

And today

Not too many photos inside, this one is of the original lounge

As it was when we purchased

And today, that room is now part of a larger kitchen/family room

Approx a year since we actually started the build, despite Covid, we are now very close to the overall finishing line, with one bedroom carpet on order and the utility room to be painted once I’ve fitted a light sensor.

Decided to do all the decorating ourselves as painters wanted so much. It won’t be quite as good as a professional, but we do a pretty good job ourselves and the wife is very good at choosing the colours, furnishing and finishes. Big downside is obviously it takes a lot longer!

Next up, the rear garden needs to pretty much start again.

Found some before and after snow photos as well
