Many thanks for very helpful comments.

I'm realising some of the combined units are also a little deeper and in the comedy constrained space in my microflat that doesn't help me. London innit.

Plus the better combined units are a bit more ££ and for whatever reason (maybe the numerous fires) I feel less relaxed about getting a cheaper end washing machine than a cheaper end washer dryer.

Siding towards at a 200-250 [Indesit] washer only and dry stuff hanging (one virtue is things do dry in the flat fast).

Cheers again - this stuff really bores the pants of me, dry or otherwise, so really great to get some input from the collective. Next up a new microbed for the micro second room as need to rent out for the dough!

Onwards
Washer and dehumidifier is an option that works well.

Had a washer/dryer from John Lewis, now have separate machines since I moved (and had the space). Washer / dryer worked fine - sure, it takes longer than a dedicated machine, but if you're not washing for a family then that's not a problem.

The advantage (which hasn't been mentioned yet) of a combined machine is the ability to throw a load in the machine, go out for much of the day, and come back to have it all washed and dried.

If there's no room for two machines, it's a no-brainer. The drying is never as effective as a standalone machine, but hot clothes dry faster so it still saves time.

As others mention, a wash+dry cycle can take much longer than you expect; 5+ hours is normal.

We have a Samsung with an 8kg wash capacity and a 5kg dry capacity. Generally speaking, the whole load goes in to wash, t-shirts and other stuff we iron come out, then towels and other stuff go back in for a dry.

Bear in mind that, if you wash a large load, you may not be able to dry it all at once, as the warm air needs to circulate through the wet wash otherwise the machine can overheat and a fire may start.

Got one in our place in Essex, had it since we moved in 10 years ago. Not missed a beat.

Ok the dryer isn't as good as a stand alone one but it works fine
Thanks all.

Sociopath - can i enquire what model/brand?

Miele might be a stretch

Thanks
Off the top of my head (I'm up north ATM) I believe it's actually a Hotpoint.

I've never bought anything as expensive as a miele

We have a hotpoint washer/drier. No room for separates (it's a flat). I think it's worth the extra over a standard washer especially if you are pressed for space. You might not want to dry everything on racks all the time. Sometimes having the drier is genuinely useful even if it's a long cycle.

The condenser washer/dryer I had would just leave the clothes very hot and still damp, often with a slight musty smell.

.

You get the musty smell if you don’t clean out the filters. Washing gets hot but stays damp if you have too much in there. No washer dryers will dry the same size load as they will wash.

ao.com.

Just ignore the phone calls trying to sell you extra insurance masquerading as customer service calls.

Btw currys now claim to price match any on line offer unless it's from a dodgy eBay ad

Sounds the same Samsung as we have.

As said, it's not a effective as a dryer only, but, in the context of it being effective enough, especially if you have no traditional airing cupboard and no where to outside air dry.

Am looking at a standard washer Hoover Dynamic or a Samsung Ecobubble as options.

Anyone any experience of how noisy these suckers are or how can easily get a reliable review if not signed up to Which! ? Spin noise is 79 and 82db respectively

And that is also part of the of the issue.

Because of the larger drum, people tend to put 8kg of clothes in, and then its grossly overloaded as a drier. Put in a 5kg load, or split the wash into two for the drying phase, and you get much better performance.

Obviously its still a hybrid/combo machine, compromises are likely, but it takes up half the space.

That's what we do.

Often don't even dry 5kg load, as lot of the stuff is 'do not tumble dry' anyway.

Bosch Serie 6 here - had it 4 years, lightly loaded, and hasn't missed a beat. I'd have to rip out the dishwasher if I wanted separates so it's a no-brainer for me.

Full hot cotton wash and dry can take 5+hours though, as a negative.
I have Bosch separates and a 7-8k hot cotton wash plus dryer time is roughly 5 hours too. You aren’t really losing anything except the capacity benefit of being able to run both at once, which you may not even need.
