Which new hoover?
Discussion
Another vote for shark.
I have the older generation lift-away and it has been great for the last 3 years. A couple of points to note - mine has 3 filters, two foam and one pleated hepa filter. I wash the foam ones every month or two depending how much I have used it and blow a the small amount of dust that gets past into the hepa filter every 6 to 9 months. You do need to keep and eye on all 3.
Other than that it has great suction, and I like the lift away function for stairs and for the car.
If/as/when it breaks, I would buy another one but definitely look out for offers. Ours was the outgoing model and we got it for half price.

Shark for the house, Gtech for the car.
Had a Dyson - did a good impression of being a hoover, but was rubbish.
The Shark tries to rip up the floorboards every time you use it, its quiet(ish) and easy to weave about with. Plus the lift away thing is handy for doing the stairs. An added bonus is that the little tool you get with a rotating brush can be made to sound exactly like a turbo'd car doing a dyno run if you play with the suction control with it attached.

Currently have a Sebo X4 which to be honest has been great. It's starting to self power off a bit too often.
I would simply go and buy a direct replacement.... but..... since we bought the current one we have bought aq dog, so have dog hair (albeit not a lot)
What are peoples recommendations? And why
Might have already been mentioned in previous pages but usually self powering off is a temperature cut off, have you changed the filters?I would simply go and buy a direct replacement.... but..... since we bought the current one we have bought aq dog, so have dog hair (albeit not a lot)

We had 2 Dysons in our house. Mine was a big heavy lump and was better than the one Mrs Toon brought from her place but it died leaving us with hers. After that lots of complaining, I sent her out to get a replacement. She came back with a Shark and it's miles better than any Dyson I've used. Really powerful suction, light and easy to use and a much better feature set and design. I'm no vacuum expert and haven't tried other models/makes but I suspect if I need a new one, I'll go straight back to Shark.

Get the Sebo serviced
Cheaper...better
This would be my starter point. What's even actually wrong with it?Cheaper...better
We have have a DC04 which I bought for £50 for my first house ten years ago, bloody can't fault it. If I had my time again I would have bought the slightly higher spec model with the clutch in the brushbar and easier release wand, but I actually can't see why I would change it.
Sucks like it's going out of fashion, solid brushbar assy, long hose, loves doghair and builder rubble alike, does a good job on the sofas and car.
Sorted

Filters are regularly changed.I didn't mention it in OP..... we're not Dyson fans. Twice bitten and all that. Did have a DC01, then a DC07, and when new they were brilliant but over a short period (couple of years) they simply lose their suction.
Will have to look into the Sharks....

We had a cheap Shark for the last 5 years with no problems but it was not perfect on hard floors so we decided to upgrade to the Shark NZ801UKT duo clean corded vac.
Have to say it's bloody brilliant, my wife has long hair and my daughter has rediculously long hair so was constantly cutting it off the roller. This thing has some fancy anti hair wrap bits that actually work. And the duo clean head with the soft and standard roller works really well on hard floors and carpets.
The powered lift away is also good.
It could also suck the arse off a cat. So is not short of power.
Didn't think I could be so impressed by a vac but I was.

The Shark merchandising team have a great wheeze (at least I presume it's them). I went into an electrical superstore looking for, most likely, a Panasonic. An assistant saw me going up and down the line of vacuums and asked if I'd like to try some out. He got a piece of carpet, put it on the floor and then sprinkled soil over it. And the Shark was easily the best. What a great way to sell vacuum cleaners if you know yours is the best!
All these people suggesting Shark and Dyson (cordless) have clearly never had a Sebo. Different league.
I was questioning my Sebo X4 last month (listening too much to the cordless vac fanboys) so decided to take a leap and get a Dyson V10. The V10 was fine of hard floors but wouldn't even pick up sock fluff on my thick carpet without pausing over it.
Sent it back on Dyson's 30 day money back guarantee and instead spent some money on servicing my Sebo (new filters and roller brush).
I think the cordless vacs are good for spot cleaning or quick freshen up but they can't match the Sebo.

I bought a Bosch athlet last year just as something easier to use quickly than getting the main Dyson cylinder out. Cost me about £150 and it pisses all over the Dyson which gets blocked far too easily. Battery lasts long enough to do my 3 bed semi as well. Also has the ability to remove the roller and cut the hair out easily similar to the sharks.
