I’m not servicing mine. Must be approx 60 quid a year plus the hassle of arranging it and being at home during office hours. I’m not convinced it’s essential or contributes to a longer life. I pay pretty much bang on the same amount per month for the homecare so if something does ever fail I can be sure a guy comes out pronto.

Get a CO alarm, £15. It won't ever go off but at least you'll be able to sleep. And don't let any of you family go outside in case they have a accident.
Got a CO alarm thanks. Quite happy to let the family go outside. Just because I have a different perception of risk doesn't mean I don't accept any risk.

My emergency cover with the home insurance requires it, but then they’ve tried to weedle their way out of it every time (the first time I complained and they covered the cost, I can’t remember why they said they wouldn’t cover it the second time)

It is madness not to have a boiler serviced. They are good, and reasonably safe, but they are inflable for ever.

I opted for every other year, but for £60 the guy came out, checked the flu gasses, checked the accumulator pressure, visual inspection and clean of the combustion space, checked the gas supply for leakage, and provided paperwork to say it had been done.

If its under warranty, I would within reason do what was required to maintain the cover.

Only owned my own place since 2015 and this thread has reminded me that I’ve never had ours done (it was new when we moved in so always thought of it as ‘new’)....now all of a sudden it’s 5 years later....!

Presumably any warranty I may have had is now worthless considering it’s been unserviced for 5 years? Guess I’ll get one done this year then maybe one every couple thereafter

Yes I've got similiar model boiler about 10 yrs old

I get it as part of home care , but would still pay for it to be done

Last couple of services the guys talked me through it and gave various other tips , as said it was more of a safety check than a service

I live in a hard water area, had a new boiler installed circa 2012 / 13 (potterton Gold 28 HE) its not once had a service and the only issues its had was the return pipe for the condenser splitting and filling it with water, changed twice (second time for free and with improved part) £30, its in my loft and I have a c02 monitor upstairs.

Installer who also does servicing said its pretty much going to last you 10 to 12 years so save the money for any problems and put towards a new one.

Time flys, but I would get it checked.

It might be fine, it might just prematurely fail, it might kill the whole family by catching fire or filling the place with carbon monoxide.

Get them to test the flu gas first. The readings should indicate to a competent person if a full service is needed. £20 rather than £60 a year

Didn't need to drive, he lives 4 doors up from me.

He is going to be installing a water softener for me next week too so I guess he will make a few quid off that.

I also feed his cats when he is on holiday with the family for no charge

Would've been helpful mentioning all that detail when making what sounded like a general recommendation. Poor OP is abusing his local heating engineers for wanting more than £20 to visit for a check-up.

My technician has quoted £40 per year for the next 3 years.

Considering I don't feed his cat, I felt that was reasonable.
