We had no control of our hot water, were bleeding heat and gas.

We just had a hive put in, temperature in the pantry where the boiler is has dropped significantly, but we still have plenty of HW when we need it.

Get a Hive.
This :-)
I'm not convinced I need a Hive. Like a lot of families, our life follows a routine most of the time so we can set our heating and hot water to come on at set times to fit around that (nothwithstanding my original post where I'd prefer a slightly more sophisticated timer to control heating and HW separately).

It's incredibly rare I have ever felt it would have been beneficial to control my heating when I'm out. I don't need it to be smart. I have a thermostat which kicks in when the house temperature drops.

To me, these systems seem to be solving a problem which didn't exist and I'm quite confident there's a data gathering incentive for Centrica with the Hive system as is the case with most of these new internet of things products.

What's the make and model of the controller?

We had a Danfoss 102e7, with no ability to control individually, and a system boiler that prioritised the hot water, which sort of make sense but is also annoying in terms of trying to get you heating to come on a certain time and or boost the heating if the house was cold.

Looked at various option for non-smart 2 channel controllers, and figured we could have a smart one for about £20 more, and ended up with a Wiser.

Usually we just use the (wireless) room thermostat to make any changes (ie, boost heating over a weekend we're home) but it is easier to program the timers on a smartphone than a little button/screen interface, you get a nice graph of temperature over time for each day, and we do turn it back on remotely a day before the end of our holiday if we're away for a week.

£140 fit and forget.

I rarely use mine outside of the house, just having simple to use controls on my phone makes it worth the cost alone imo. In fact I’m cold so have just pressed boost for 2 hours sat on my arse

We bought the hive for exactly the solution you are looking for. To take proper control of the HW.

The interface with the Hive is so simple, you don't need an instruction book, allows proper 7 day programming.

We've not used the mobile phone thing.

It is nice to be able to move it around the house, although, a few days in we got in settled in a place that seems to suit us.

I guess how worthwhile it is depends on how much heat you think you are bleeding by having hot water on all the time. We have a drafty and tall 1920's heap that bleeds heat. The airing cupboard is now sub tropical, but still warm. The pantry where the 30 year old boiler is, has gone from sauna to only slightly noticeably warmer. Not had it long enough to notice a change in gas bill, but I think there must be.
