And it's nuts quite how much work is needed to get these old buildings up to scratch!

Nice house and a very good agent's video as well - the presenter comes across as likeable and knowledgeable, I'd employ them to sell my place based on that film.https://youtu.be/hA6hhErTDzs

Apologies of already posted but this is well done, surprised they got some of it through planning as Grade 2 listed

It isn't well done actually, there used to be a matterport virtual walkthrough (you'll notice it's been removed from the advert) and the small details are terrible. As you walk through the main door either side of it are exposed radiator pipes sticking up out of the marble floor for radiators not used because there are warm air heating vents next to them. Other areas are rough too.https://michaelgraham.co.uk/property/rps_mig-WBS19...
It's been for sale for at least 3 years. Close to £2m (it was £2m in 2018) for in real usage terms a 3 bed and no garden privacy (except the small terrace behind it).

Really? I mean, sure, the kitchen is nice enough, but nothing to write home about, imo anyway. To my eyes, the rest of the place is distinctly meh, and for me, the Georgian rectory above knocks it into a cocked hat.
Tough crowd! I like it so there!
How about living in a church tower? This may be one for the nightmares thread though as it has 9 floors…

few pointers, it is very open to the public, they make it look like there is that wall but it has public access all around, it is in the middle of commercial district, yes it look nice but clearly out of place now.How about living in a church tower? My last house was an old Mill, and it had the ponds and race. I looked at power generation but it wasn't feasible on any useful scale. It would have powered some outdoor lights (or charged batteries for low-draw stuff like that) but wasn't really a cost-effective solution for power generation for fuller domestic use. It's all technically possible, with enough head (fnaar), but you'd never get your investment back so would only be a labour of love. Well, certainly in my case anyway - if you can scale-up and sell to the grid it might be different.

The thought was triggered a couple of years ago camping at the River Dart Country park - they power all their needs via a waterscrew (although I'll concede it's perhaps a 7m head height, and a modern pipe with waterscrew along it's full length which I'd imagine maximises energy 'extraction').
For me, it'd be a little bit of a labour of love. Have to find the right house first though!
I looked at an old mill house around 20 years and investigated costs of reinstating a water wheel for electricity generation. Cost of the mechanicals was estimated at £30k, but there was additional costs in connecting to the grid and negotiating with the Environment Agency over the diversion and use of "their" water. In the end the house didn't work for us so didn't proceed.
