Maybe the person who keeps on saying to you "I've got wood" has another intention.

Having a full wood store is as good as money in the bank.

This was our first winter with a wood burner and I wasn't really sure how much we would go through.

I may have got a little carried away over the summer collecting wood and now I think we have about 3 years worth rofl

I think the neighbours believe I have a problem...

I'll do anything for a free log, etc.

Another prime example of why PH should have a like button! Super! I’m hugely envious after seeing that this morning! I’m off outside to go and play with the axe to make myself feel better.

Yes, it's very therapeutic messing about with wood.

I quite agree, it even made me quit my desk day job and set up my own tree surgery business!

I’m in trouble.
Our apple tree has been leaning more due to torrential rain and many many storms. It’s got to the point where we either just watch it fall over or reduce the weight.

So I discussed options with the wife, told her what I planned to do then trimmed the tree. Now she’s complaining that I’ve ruined the pretty tree…

On the plus side we now have loads of wood for the smoker!

After (still a bit to do on top)

We inherited a ‘never ending’ log pile when we moved here two years back. The huge semi split pile had been sat there for unprotected for at least 7years from what I know from the previous owner as was a result of at least 10 mature firs being felled on the grounds. Apart from the top layer most of the logs are soaked and some are decaying badly.

The last two years have seen countless barrows taken to be stored / dried, but now they’re full, the big project for the summer is to build more stores (pallets) , or to stack them with a ‘roof’ right next to the pile to then try and dry them over the next few years. Need to hire a splitter for the other pile of rounds that are next to it.

Feels daunting, but getting stuck in, as the ones we’ve dried so far have burnt very nicely.

Edit : can someone remind be how to right the picture please!!

Spent a happy hour making loads of kindling, nice and straight so that I can build entertainingly large jenga towers in the stove when lighting the fire with the top down method

Looks like a bigger version of our apple tree, which is taking on an increasingly bigger lean, year on year. I think it's going to end up being taken down to be honest is it doesn't hold its fruit well and has a lot of old canker wounds.

I see (or I don't) your large pile of kindling Harry Flashman - if I were to do that the very next fire that is made the kids would just feed the entire fire with kindling only. - I now just split off enough to light 2 fires.

That is a serious pile of wood thepritch, my last load was delivered at 20%, so is really struggling! - My summer job will be to make a wood store for about 3 cords (10 cubic meters) then beg/borrow/steal to fill it up!

You reminded me to go and check - the sodden logs are currently reading 42-47% !! Might take a while for them to dry smile

I also found with 20% I’d have to get the fire up to temp first before using then. 16% seems to work ok for first logs to go in the burner, they take well.

What you building your store from? I was thinking our next can be quite Heath Robinson and perhaps pallets with tin roof?

If you have plenty of space - IBC cages with tin sheets on top work pretty well. Loads of airflow means really quick seasoning and no need to stack, just throw them in.

Not beautiful but probably no worse than pallets - can also obviously be easily moved if you have access to a tractor/forklift.

A quick Google gives you loads of options, ebay always being a good place to start. Despatch/transport will obvs be an expensive element in the purchase.

Man maths says you want a proper cast table top saw like in my workshop. Kindling is cut in seconds.
