Everyone's a critic Daniel! I posted a pic of the kitchen in a thread where folk were giving advice on worktops, and someone told me it looked like a Co-op funeral parlour!

I try to treat these forums as I would a conversation in person i.e. use some tact and not say anything that I would not to someone's face. Not everyone regards posting on the net in the same way, though.

Back to the nice and friendly gardening thread, methinks...

Fake cast iron is fine as cast iron is not the most suitable material for cast iron radiators. Times have moved on.

Bloody awful heavy material.

I actually really like your kitchen, and wouldn't even make the changes you said you would if you were to do it again! Is that the "flat eggshell" stuff you have used?
There are a few places near me, the closest labels itself as a "paint consultancy" which just gives me an image of an effeminate man in a shiny suit wanting me to create a "colour workbook" or something. Not going there...

Heh. I am design and colour obsessed, but frankly I think making design choices for your home is relatively easy these days, given resources like houzz.co.uk. Just find something you like and copy it!

The biggest thing with picking paint colours for me has always been trying it in situ - painted cards on different walls in the same room and see how they all look at different times of day.

And yes, it was the flat eggshell stuff I used - seems to be holding up well. A couple of bits on the table edge have chipped off, but frankly that was due to my poor preparation. Where I dod the work properly (utility rooms cabinets - I sanded and then used Zinsser BIN shellac paint to seal and prime the old surfaces) it appears to be sticking like glue.

You clearly have an eye for it, the house looks great.

I'm just going for a pretty radical "white" type colour, and use Zinsser stuff on pretty much anything that isn't a wall or ceiling, so have ordered a litre to try out on skirting - stay tuned!
I don't think I'll be usiing their gloss, because I only use that for exterior doors and I like to rub down and buff them to a really perfect shine - the "natural oils" bit might not be too good with that, so I'll be sticking with the Sikkens.

Are you just still in agreement that Johnstones paint is still the best then?
And what brushes would you recommend? I’ve got a lot of painting to do so want good quality brushes that’ll last?

We've used a few different brands now, Little Green, F&B and Neptune.

I thought Little Green was the best to actually apply and use, F&B looks the best in different lights but marks very easily. Neptune also good but fairly expensive and quite generic.

Armstead is a better paint than Johnstones. Some of their paints are better than Dulux.

Just to add more detail a few years on - I advocated Tikkarila paints…since then, I had the pleasure of using Optiva 5. It’s fantastic, pricey…but really incredible paint. Super Matt and scrubbable. Amazing to put on and opacity is insane. My decorator pal won’t use anything else.

I have also just done a a smaller room and tested the new Tikkarila Vinyl Matt as it was on offer - it’s obviously not as good as the Optiva 5, but it’s brilliant for a budget trade paint. It’s slightly more the Johnsons Covaplus (think I paid about £16 for 3l of colour matched F&B direct from Tikkarila with my trade account), but it’s a better paint for sure. Opacity is really good and goes on lovely.

Armstead is the more cost effective trade version of Dulux, owned by Dulux, so I’d question that.

Crown trade Matt is at least as good as Dulux trade, we found it covers better and is about 15% less expensive.

I was a dedicated Dulux fan but once I had all my white gloss turn yellow in a few months I decided I'd be buying anything but Dulux!

If you get water based of any brand it doesn’t yellow. It’s only oil based that yellows, worse than ever due to regulatory changes.

We have a conservatory painted in a distinctive F&B colour inside and out. It needed redoing every 3 years due to colour fade and flaking. Last time I did it the F&B was so expensive I thought I would try Johnstone’s colour match where they mix the same colour using their paint. That was 6 years ago, still looks great.
